02/22/08 | Women's Lacrosse
BLACKSBURG, Va. ? Oregon scored 10 second-half goals, including four in the final 14 minutes, to edge Virginia Tech, 14-13, on Friday afternoon at Tech Lacrosse Stadium.
The one-goal victory improves Oregon's record to 2-1 on the season, while the Hokies fall to 0-3.
Nine different players scored for Oregon during the game, as the Ducks staged a come back after trailing 6-4 at the half.
“It was definitely an all-around effort,” head coach Jen Larsen said. “We had nine different players score in a very close match. It was a great feeling to pull one out on the road and walk off the field victorious.”
The Ducks were trailing 12-10 with under 14 minutes remaining, until and offensive onslaught put Oregon in the lead. During a nine-minute stretch, the Ducks scored four unanswered goals, led by senior Lindsay Killian with two and freshman Anna Swicklik with one. The Ducks' final score, which proved to be the game-winner with 2:41 remaining, was an own goal.
Virginia Tech scored at the 1:32 mark, but could not find the equalizer before the final horn sounded.
The Hokies outshot the Ducks 32-27, and had only nine turnovers compared to Oregon's 13.
“Our defensive effort was outstanding,” Larsen said. “Anna (Poponyak) really grounded our entire defense from the goal.”
Poponyak made a game-high 10 saves on the afternoon, playing all 60 minutes inbetween the pipes.
On offense, Jen May and Ilsa van den Berg, Killian and Swicklik each had two goals apiece, while Theresa Waldron, Jana Bradley, Alex Breiner, Cara Mead and Casey Rector also scored.
The Ducks edged the Hokies in ground balls, 18-17, and draw controls, 16-13.
Oregon will now take on 18th-ranked Richmond at 9 a.m. PST on Sunday. The Spiders are 1-1 on the year, defeating Drexel 13-10 in their season opener, but falling 17-6 to third-ranked Duke.
