Ducks End Road Trip With 6-1 Loss To Gauchos

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The rain cleared just in time for the UC Santa Barbara and Oregon men's tennis teams to square off on Sunday afternoon at the Recreational Center Courts.

The Gauchos prevailed, 6-1, improving to 3-2 on the year, while the Ducks fell to 6-5. This is the third straight weekend Oregon has split two matches on the road. Oregon defeated No. 63 UC Irvine, 5-1, on Saturday.

At the No. 2 slot in doubles, UCSB's Alexander Konigsfelst and Josh Finkelstein defeated Oregon's tandem of Alex Cornelissen and Mike Myrhed, 8-4. The Gauchos No. 3 team of Bijan Hejazi and Nigel Barton then staged a come-from-behind victory over Francisco Gallardo and Stephen Wiechert in a 9-8 win that captured the doubles point for the Gauchos.

For the second consecutive match, Oregon's top team of Geoff Embry and Marcos Verdasco won their doubles match, 8-5, over UCSB's No. 1 team of Jack Hui and Philip Therp.

Oregon found only one singles victory on the day, with Embry defeating Max Taylor, 7-6, 6-1 at the No. 5 position.

Verdasco and Gallardo each took their respective matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to three sets, but could not prevail. Verdasco fell 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 to Hejazi, while Gallardo was upended by Therp at No. 2, 4-6, 6-3,6-4.

At the third position, Konigsfeldt defeated Cornelissen in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, while Hui got past Oregon's Romeo Mortera, 6-2, 7-5, at the No. 4 spot.

Eric Lee knocked off Myrhed, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 position.

After three weekends on the road, the Ducks return to Eugene to host Washington at 5 p.m. on Friday.
