No. 7 North Carolina Pulls Away In Second Half
03/11/08 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. ? Oregon's six-game winning streak was snapped on Tuesday night, after seventh-ranked North Carolina dominated the second half and produced a 14-9 victory over the 18th-ranked Ducks at Pape' Field.
At 6-2 on the season, Oregon is still off to its best start in program history, while the Tar Heels improve to 6-1 on the year.
The Ducks had an 8-7 edge at the half, led by two goals from both junior Ilsa van den Berg and freshmen Alex Breiner.
“At the end, possession was key, and we couldn't get that back,” Oregon head coach Jen Larsen said.
North Carolina ended the game by scoring the last six goals of the contest. Julia Ryan and Corey Donohoe led the Tar Heels with four goals apiece.
“North Carolina went into stall,” Oregon senior Jana Bradley said. “We had to push out and not play our normal defense, so we were exhausted. That was kind of the breaking point for us.”
A goalkeeper change also helped North Carolina in the second half. Amanda Barnes started the game, allowing eight goals in the first period. Logan Ripley replaced Barnes in goal after the half, and North Carolina allowed only one goal after that.
North Carolina now holds a 3-0 series lead over the Ducks.
Bradley added two goals for Oregon, while Lindsay Killian, Jen May and Jenny Browne also scored one goal apiece.
The Ducks remain at home this week and will host Columbia at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Pape' Field.
