The No. 12 Oregon women's
lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking 10-9 loss to Johns Hopkins at La Costa
Canyon High School on Saturday afternoon.
The game was even at 8-8 after a goal from Lindsay Killian
with 8:49 to go, but the Blue Jays
mustered an answer for the Ducks as Paige Ibello and Brett Bathras scored the
go-ahead goals during the following three minutes.
Oregon's Jana
Bradley got the Ducks within one after her score at the 1:43 mark, but Oregon
was unable to net the equalizer before the end of regulation.
Oregon drops
to 7-3 on the season, while Johns Hopkins improves to 3-4.
This was Oregon's
fifth game in 2008 that has been decided by one goal, with the Ducks owning a 3-2
record in those contests.
John Hopkins outshot Oregon
33-22, and forced the Ducks into a season-high 19 turnovers.
Senior Theresa Waldron led Oregon
with three goals, while Bradley, (2), Killian (1), Erin Chisnell (1), Ilsa van
den Berg (1) and Cara Mead (1), were also in the scoring column.
Bathras led the Blue Jays with her three goals and two
assists, while Sam Schrum also put three in the back of the net to go along
with one assist.
The Blue Jays starting goalkeeper, Julianne Wisner, played
the first 20 minutes allowing four Oregon
goals without making a save, before being replaced by Lizzie O'Ferrall. In the
last 40 minutes of action, O'Ferrall allowed five goals, but made seven saves,
six in the second period.
Oregon junior
goalkeeper Anna Poponyak played the entire 60 minutes, allowing 10 goals and
making 10 saves.
The Ducks will travel east during Spring Break to play at
St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m. on
Wednesday, and before heading home, play Colgate at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
QUICK QUACKS: Johns Hopkins now holds a 3-0 advantage in its
series against the Ducks... the game was played at La Costa Canyon High School in
San Diego, Calif., the alma mater of Oregon's Anna Poponyak, Celeste Mayer,
Jana Bradley, Kelly Giblin and Casey Rector...this was the second trip to San
Diego for Oregon this year...the Ducks defeated Notre Dame 14-13 on March 6 as
part of the East West Challenge.
