Ducks Score Game Winner In Triple OT For 11-10 Victory
03/26/08 | Women's Lacrosse
CORNING, N.Y. ? In another nailbiter, 14th-ranked Oregon prevailed in triple overtime as Ilsa van den Berg scored the game winner and led the Ducks to an 11-10 victory over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.
The Ducks improve to 8-3 on the year, while the Bonnies fall to 1-5. The game marked the sixth for Oregon that has been decided by just one goal this year. The Ducks are 4-2 in those contests.
The Bonnies held a slight 4-3 advantage as the teams headed into the halftime break, but a regrouped Oregon squad opened the second period scoring five unanswered goals, with three coming from senior Jana Bradley and two from van den Berg.
“The team wasn't sharp in the first half,” Oregon head coach Jen Larsen said. “We came out on fire in the second half, but unfortunately let St. Bonaventure back in the game and let them have the momentum late. But in the end we had the confidence to finish strong for the win.”
After Oregon took an 8-4 lead with over 21 minutes left to play, the Bonnies scored five of the last six goals in regulation to send the game into over time.
Required to play two three-minute overtime periods, it was St. Bonaventure's Christine Hanley who scored the first goal to put the Bonnies ahead. Oregon then tied the game at 10-10 when Jen May knocked in her 18th goal of the season with 55 seconds remaining in the second three-minute stint.
Sent into a third and final OT, van den Berg, the team's leading goal scorer, clocked in the game winner with only 21 seconds left.
The junior attacker continues to lead the team with 28 goals on the year, and the score against the Bonnies was her second game winner of the year. Van den Berg also provided the clincher during a 14-13 win over then-No. 11 Notre Dame on March 7 in San Diego.
Van den Berg, Bradley and May each had three goals apiece while Lindsay Killian supplied two goals and one assist.
For St. Bonaventure, Hanley led the Bonnies with three goals.
Oregon is now 2-0 vs. St. Bonaventure in the all-time series.
The Ducks will remain on the East Coast to play Colgate at 9 a.m. PST on Sunday morning. Live stats will be linked at www.GoDucks.com.
QUICK QUACKS: Oregon senior attacker Theresa Waldron was unavailable to play on Wednesday due to injury.
