Cal Remains Undefeated In MPSF With 12-8 Win Over Oregon
04/12/08 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. ? The visiting California Bears remained undefeated in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action after posting a 12-8 victory over Oregon on Saturday afternoon at Pape' Field.
Cal improves to 8-5 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while the 19th-ranked Ducks fall to 9-5 and 1-3 in the MPSF.
Although Oregon outshot the Bears, 29-23, it was 5-foot-1, California goalkeeper Morgan Dyson, who made a match-high 14 saves to make the difference in the scoreline.
For the second consecutive game, a slow start plagued the Ducks. Cal scored three of the game's first four goals, leading to a 7-3 advantage at halftime.
“It's a lack of focus all around,” head coach Jen Larsen said. “We lost our defensive focus and our shooters weren't finding open space. We needed to out hussle Cal.”
Oregon opened up the second half scoring three unanswered goals to come within one score of tying the game at 7-6 with under 24 minutes remaining, but Cal went on a streak of its own. The Bears put four consecutive goals in the back of the net to crush the Ducks' hope of a comeback.
“We just beat ourselves,” Oregon sophomore Erin Chisnell said. “We needed to play hard for 60 minutes. We've been in a lull and its continuing. We needed people to step up and be consistent the whole time.”
Cal was led by Brittany Aungier and Alyse Kennedy, who each recorded hat tricks. Danni Zuralow added two goals for the Bears as well.
Oregon's offense was led by Theresa Waldron, Jen May and Chisnell, who each scored two goals apiece. Ilsa van den berg and Cara Mead also had goals.
Oregon controlled the game by winning 14 draw controls and picking up 15 ground balls, but couldn't convert possession into scores.
The Ducks have now lost two games in a row for the first time this season.
Oregon plays its final home game at 1 p.m. tomorrow hosting Saint Mary's. Oregon's senior class will be honored prior to the first draw.
