Seniors Lead The Way To Victory Over Saint Mary's
04/13/08 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. ? Oregon's 2008 senior class left Pape' Field for the last time in a dominating fashion, leading the Ducks to a 20-3 victory over Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon.
Oregon's 20-goal output was the most goals the team has scored this season, and also the program's largest margin of victory during the last four seasons.
The No. 19 Ducks improve to 10-5 on the year and 2-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Gaels fall to 2-12 overall and 0-3 in conference.
“We needed a win like this today,” head coach Jen Larsen said. “Everyone participated and the goalies had significant impact and made some great saves.”
Prior to the start, Oregon honored its eight-member senior class. The class marks the first ever in Duck history as the seniors were freshmen during Oregon's inaugural 2005 season.
“This was our day so we were pumped to play one more time at Pape' Field,” Jen May said. “It's crazy to think that it has already been four years.”
Six of Oregon's eight seniors recorded goals, led by May, Lindsay Killian and Jana Bradley, who each scored hat tricks. Theresa Waldron (1 goal, 2 assists), Jenny Browne (2 goals, 2 assists) and Liora Lobel (1 goal) also reached the scoreboard.
Juniors Ilsa van den Berg and Casey Rector added two goals apiece, while Erin Gaebe, Anna Swicklik and Erin Chisnell also scored.
Junior goalkeeper Anna Poponyak played the first half making two saves, while redshirt freshman Hannah Jones and sophomore Sam Debow split time in the second half and shut the Gaels out in the final 30 minutes.
Saint Mary's three goals is also the fewest allowed for Oregon this season.
The Ducks outshot SMC 45-13 and also forced the Gaels into 20 turnovers.
“It's really weird to think about, but I don't think it has hit us yet,” Killian said about senior day. “We still have three more weeks to play so we'll be practicing on this field, just no more games.”
Oregon finishes the regular season on the road next week on the East Coast. The Ducks play at Vermont on Friday, and will play at New Hampshire on Sunday.
The MPSF Tournament, hosted by California, begins on Wednesday April 30.
