EUGENE - The No. 12 UO volleyball team swept Baylor to win its third and final tourney match Saturday evening and claim the Oregon Classic title.
UO (9-1) posted scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-18 en route to its seventh sweep of the season and second of the tourney. Earlier Saturday, the Ducks had dispatched Eastern Washington (3-0), while the host beat UNLV (4-1) Friday night.
Although it entered the three-match tourney undefeated, Baylor (8-2) suffered its second defeat of the day Saturday. The Bears hit .138 for the match and was led in kills by Katie Sanders (10, .185) who was named to the all-tourney team with teammate Ashlie Christenson. The latter ranked fifth in the all-tourney stats with 3.00 kills per set average but was shutout Saturday evening in the kills column in her five attempts and held to a -0.60 hitting mark.
Duck senior Gorana Maricic was named the tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tourney squad by junior teammates Neticia Enesi and Sonja Newcombe. Also tabbed in the head coaches vote were UNLV's Jessica Waters and Kelsey Keeler.
Maricic racked up 17 kills and a .323 hitting mark Saturday evening vs. the Bears. Junior Sonja Newcombe added 13 kills and a .276 hitting mark, and her nine digs left her one short of her fourth double-double of the season.
Junior setter Nevena Djordjevic came up with 34 assists, Maricic led UO for the first time this year in blocks (7) - two more than senior Kristen Forristall (5) - and senior libero Katie Swoboda was the consumate team player having to sprint, dive and somersault on nearly all of her 11 digs.
Overall, the second-year Duck and returning All-American Maricic had the most kills in the tournament in only nine sets played (46, 4.60 kills per set), while Enesi and Djordjevic led all tournament players in hitting (.475, 24 kills) and assists (109, 10.90 aps), respectively.
"It's so exciting to play here because every time we won a point the crowd gave us an extra boost of excitement," Maricic said. "We know we need to play better and be more consistent during the match, but there were lots of great individual plays by the whole team. Ones that stand out were a great set by Kristen (Forrsitall) on a kill and some great serves by Amanda (Westrick) to keep us alive at key points. We all agreed it was really fun to be back playing at home."
Newcombe validated her All-Oregon Classic recognition with her top-10 tourney cumulative rankings in digs (third, 3.60 avg.), kills (sixth-tie, 2.80 avg.), assists (seventh, 0.50 avg.), blocks (eighth, 0.70 avg.) and hitting (ninth, .236).
Other Ducks that also ranked top 10 in in various categories included Meyers in hitting (fourth, .389) and kills (sixth-tie, 2.80), Enesi in blocks (fourth-tie, 1.00 avg.) and kills (eighth, 2.40), Forristall in blocks (fourth-tie, 1.00 avg) and hitting (sixth, .295), Djordjevic and Westrick in aces (third-tie, 0.50 avg / sixth-tie, 0.40) and Swoboda in digs (fourth, 3.50 avg.) and assists (eighth-tie, 0.40 avg.).
In the first set Saturday evening, the two teams were tied 5-5 when UO's Westrick served the Ducks on a 7-0 run thanks to an ace, kills by Meyers and Newcombe, and three BU hitting errors. Soon after, UO extended its lead to 14-8 before Baylor battled back to deadlock the match 18-18, 19-19 and 21-21 and even went up 22-21. A UO timeout gave the home team new life, especially after two straight kills by Newcombe and Maricic to make it 23-22. Baylor tied it once more, 23-23, on a Forristall attack error before Maricic and Enesi put UO up 1-0 in sets thanks to consecutive kills.
Scoring couldn't have been more even early in set two with nine ties through a 9-9 count, before UO rattled off four points to go up 13-9 on the second of back-to-back Maricic kills. The Ducks extended their lead to 18-12 and 19-14 on kills by Meyers and Forristall, before Baylor stormed back to close within 21-20 with the last four points on attack errors by Duck hitters. Another UO timeout calmed matters as Djordjevic and Maricic responded with kills that were followed by two BU hitting errors to end the period, 25-20.
The third set began equally dramatic with scoring separated by two points or less the first half of the set. With Baylor up 15-13, the Ducks came back with a 12-5 run to end the deciding stanza thanks to two kills a piece by Maricic and Newcombe, a kill by Forristall and a service ace by Meyers, along with five Baylor hitting errors (while the visitors converting only one kill in that stretch).
Oregon finished the match with a .307 hitting percentage - its sixth +.300 mark the last seven matches - while limiting the Bears to .138 - half of their season average (.287) coming into the tourney.
Looking ahead, the Ducks also play at home Sunday, September 14 at 1 p.m. vs. Seattle. Youth 12 and under can receive $1 tickets at the entrance, and can check in at the marketing display off the University street entrance (on the northwest side of the building) to sign up for a free half-hour post-match skills clinic with Duck coaches and players.
QUICK QUACKS: UO head coach Jim Moore is now 60-42 all-time for UO and 412-198 overall. ... UO is now 41-3 in the preseason under Moore, and has yet to lose a home tournament match under the fourth-year mentor (and sports a 11-0 mark).
