TUALATIN, Ore. ? Jen Stoltenberg scored a pair of goals to lead Oregon past Portland State 3-0 Friday night at the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation Center.
"We took control right from the beginning and dominated play throughout," said coach Tara Erickson. "It was a well-rounded team effort and we played our style of soccer and did what we needed to do to get the win."
In moving to 5-2-1 on the season, Oregon extended its unbeaten streak to five matches (4-0-1) and has scored three goals in four of those five contests. The Vikings fell to 1-8.
Stoltenberg scored the game-winner in the fifth minute when she dribbled past a PSU defender on the right side and hammered home a shot from 10 yards out.
The sophomore from Mission Viejo, Calif., added her second goal of the night, and fifth of the season, in the 66th minute when she finished a cross from Danielle Sweeney from 12 yards out. Stoltenberg leads Oregon in 2008 with five goals and five assists for 15 points.
The Ducks also received credit for an own goal in 28th minute. Sweeney sent in ball in that a Portland State player deflected into the Vikings' net on an attempted clear.
Oregon outshot the Vikings 17-6 and 13 of the Ducks' 17 shots were on goal.
"The possession by our forwards was great tonight," said Erickson. "They were all over the place and Mercedes Walters did a great job supporting them from the midfield."
Freshman Cody Miles and sophomore Tori Johnson combined for the shut out. Miles was credited with two saves in getting her fifth win of the season.
"Cody is gaining in confidence," said Erickson. "She was good coming out after the ball tonight.
"We got to play a lot of people tonight," said Erickson. "It was good to go on the road and take care of business."
The Ducks return to Eugene for their final non-conference game of 2008 on Sept. 28 when they host Weber State.
NOTES: Sweeney's nine career assists tie teammate Teresa Bowns for fourth on the UO books ... Bowns climbed over Erin Anderson (100/1996-99) for fifth place in shots with 104 ... the Ducks played a season-high 21 players, including freshman midfielder Catherine Brothers who saw action for the first time this season.
