Second Half Shooting Dooms Ducks
03/01/09 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Outscored by 27 points in the second half, Oregon fell 70-41 in the final leg of the Civil War Series at Gill Coliseum on Saturday night in front of a raucous crowd of 3,507.
Oregon drops to 9-18 on the season and 5-11 in the Pac-10 Conference, having lost its last three. With just two games left in the regular season, the Ducks remain seventh in the conference standings. If Oregon finishes the year with wins over UCLA and USC next week at home, and the currently fifth-place Bruins drop their final three, the Ducks could still finish sixth in league and receive a first-round bye at the Pac-10 Tournament.
The Beavers (17-10, 7-9) remain sixth in the conference standings, but the season sweep provides the Beavers any tiebreak advantages.
Oregon State's win marked the first time the Beavers have swept the season series with the Ducks since 1992-93, and it's just the fifth sweep for OSU in the series history. The Beavers' 29-point win was its largest margin of victory over Oregon since a 97-32 victory on Feb. 25, 1975.
The Beavers outscored the Ducks 37-10 in the second half after the first 20 minutes went back-and-forth as the two teams exchanged the lead five times
OSU shot 51.0 percent in the game, led by a game-high 21 points from senior guard Brittney Davis. Also in double figures for the Beavers was Talisa Rhea with 18 and Mercedes Fox-Griffin with 11.
Taylor Lilley led Oregon with eight points and three assists, before fouling out with 5:20 remaining in the game. Amanda Johnson also had eight for the Ducks.
After shooting 57.1 percent (12-of-21) in the first half, the Ducks were a cold 4-of-26 (15.4 percent) in the second.
Oregon State outscored Oregon 32-22 in the paint, and also scored 22 points off the Ducks turnovers, as well as 21 second-chance points.
The Beavers went to the free-throw line 26 times, making 18 of those attempts, while the Ducks were 5-of-7 from the stripe.
Oregon State had a slight 33-31 advantage at the half. The Ducks started the game on the right foot with Jasmin Holliday winning the tip and Micaela Cocks hitting a three-pointer on Oregon's first possession.
Davis led all scorers with 10 points in the first half, while Lilley led the Ducks with seven before exiting the game with under five minutes remaining after picking up her third foul.
The Ducks knocked down 4-of-6 three-point attempts in the first half.
Oregon will close the regular season at Mac Court next week hosting UCLA at 7 p.m., Thursday, and USC at 12:30 p.m., Saturday. Oregon senior Rita Kollo will be honored prior to Saturday's tip.
Notes: Oregon used its 11th starting lineup of the season; Cocks, Lilley, Holliday, Saffold, Manou...Oregon's 18 losses this season match the most in program history (1992-93)...Lilley fouled out with 5:20 remaining in the game...it was the second time she has fouled out this season...this was the ninth game of the year Oregon failed to eclipse the 50-point mark...it was a also the first time this season Oregon has had zero players in double figures.
