Late Heroics Lift Ducks Past Brown, 10-9
03/24/09 | Women's Lacrosse
PROVIDENCE, RI -- Trailing 9-7 with 3:57 remaining, the University of Oregon stretched its winning streak to six games by scoring the final three goals of the game, including two in the final 1:46, to edge the Brown women's lacrosse team, 10-9, in a come-from-behind win.
Freshman twins Jana and Jess Drummond combined for seven of UO's 10 goals, and goalie Anna Poponyak made five of her seven saves on the day in the second half to help the Ducks (7-2) equal the program's longest consecutive victory streak.
Freshman Katelyn Caro led Brown (4-3) with four goals, while classmate Kaela McGilloway also had four points with two goals and two assists.
Caro gave the Bears a three-goal lead at 8-5 with her third tally of the game at 13:19 of the second half, but Oregon got one goal each from Jess Drummond and her sister over the next 58 seconds to claw within 8-7.
Neither team could score over the next 12 minutes, but another Caro goal with 3:57 remaining gave Brown a 9-7 lead. However, the Drummond sisters both found the back of the cage again over the next 2:11, to tie the game at 9-9 with 1:46 left to play.
The Ducks won the ensuing draw control and then senior Ilsa van den Berg lifted the visitors to the win when she connected on a free position attempt with 62 seconds left.
Brown jumped out to a 6-1 lead, but goals by van den Berg and Catherine Davidson late in the first half pulled the Ducks within three at the break.
The Bears scored the second half's first goal for a 7-3 advantage until Jana Drummond scored back-to-back unassisted goals at 7:40 and 11:28 to bring the Ducks to within 7-5.
Draw controls proved to be a huge difference in the game, as the teams were tied, 5-5, in the first half. However, Oregon was able to come up with 10 of the 11 second-half draw controls, including several late in the game, helping to secure the Ducks come-from-behind win.
The Ducks also took better advantage of free position shots, converting 3-of-3 while Brown managed only 1-of-9.
The game was Oregon's first on a four-game road trip that includes a neutral site contest on Thursday against Delaware. The Ducks play at LeMoyne on Saturday and finish off the string with a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) clash in Denver April 4.
