EUGENE, Ore. - In front of 1,272 fans at McArthur Court, the Oregon stunts and gymnastics team placed first at the Duck Invitational with a score of 239.97 out of a possible 266. Azusa Pacific took second with a score of 236.19 and Ohio State placed third with a score of 225.59.
“Thank you Eugene! To have 1,200 people at our first event is amazing,” said head coach Felecia Mulkey. “The fans really answered. We like everyone to be around and cheering, we feed off of that.”
The Duck Invitational was a National Competitive Stunts and Tumbling Association meet, which features five rounds (stunts, baskets, pyramids, tumbling and team routine). The Ducks took first in all five rounds, Azusa placed second in all five rounds and Ohio State was third in all five rounds.
The meet was the first home event in the stunts and gymnastics program's history and athletics director Mike Bellotti and his wife along with University President Dr. Richard Lariviere and his wife were in attendance. President Lariviere handed out the first place plaque to the Ducks after the final scores were announced.
Mulkey said the excitement of finally getting to show off her team and sport to the Eugene community hit a crescendo last night.
“I went to bed at 12:30 last night, but then I woke up at 4:15 a.m. and haven't had any sleep since," Mulkey said. "I have been playing out this meet all day in my head. I know my team reflects me, so I tried to keep it together. They did such an amazing job today, it made all the stress worth it. I can't wait to do it again."
The Ducks will host another meet, the Northwest Invitational, at Mac Court on Sunday, March 7.
