AZUSA, Calif. -- Erin Funkhouser and Ingmar Kerem both set personal bests in the shot put to highlight their first day of competition at the Mt. SAC/California Invitational Combined Events Wednesday at Cougar Athletic Stadium.
Funkhouser, a senior from Grass Valley, Ore., was 17th in the top section of the heptathlon with 2,618 points. In addition to her PR in the shot put of 31 feet, 8.5 inches, she also neared a PR in the 200 meters, running 26.48.
Kerem, a sophomore from Portland, Ore., recorded three PRs in the California Invitational section of the decathlon, including the shot put (39-1.25), 400 meters (52.43) and 100 meters (11.75).
In the competition, Kerem tied for fourth in the high jump at 6-4, was sixth in the shot put and ninth in the 400. He stood in seventh with 3,393 points following day one.
Oregon's Aaron McVein was forced to withdraw due to an injury after three events, which was unfortunate for the senior from Eugene, Ore., because he was off to a solid start.
He was fourth in the 100 meters in 11.40 and set a personal best in the long jump at 22-7.25, which was good for third. He was also 10th in the shot put at 38-2.
