EUGENE - The No. 18 University of Oregon volleyball team (13-6, 6-5) came back from an 0-2 deficit for its first five-set win of the year, and notched its 12th straight win over Washington State (11-10, 3-8) in a nationally-televised Fox/Root Sports Net match Friday night in Eugene.

It was a figurative tale of two matches for the Ducks who dropped the first two sets by 25-21 and 25-17 counts. After the 10-minute intermission, UO roared back for a 25-8 decision in the third set - the lowest point tally by a Duck foe this year - and 25-13 advantage in the fourth stanza.

In the fifth set, WSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead and forced UO head coach Jim Moore to call his only two timeouts. The Ducks battled back to pull within three at 8-5, then ended the match on a 10-4 run en route to a 15-12 final score.

"It was unacceptable how we came out tonight," Moore said. "I told them that we needed to be the aggressor, serve aggressively, and play with energy, which we didn't at the start. We took them for granted and weren't focused, and they made us pay the first two sets."

The stats validated the contrast with WSU owning notable advantages after two sets in hitting (.348-.118) and blocks (9.0-2.5).

However, by match's end, the Ducks ended with healthy margins in nearly every category, including hitting (.244-.161), kills (64-46), assists (57-44), digs (63-57), aces (4-3) and fewest service errors (9-10), and were a half-block shy in the other comparison (10.5-11.0).

The UO offense featured three outside hitters with +13 kills - redshirt juniors Alaina Bergsma (18K, .277) and Katherine Fischer (13K, .242), and freshman outside hitter Liz Brenner (career high 15 kills).

"We were determined that we weren't going to keep playing like we did early," Brenner said. "Our focus in the final three sets was only on the next point. We knew we needed to step it up, and we did."

Bergsma added 11 digs for her fifth double-double for the Ducks, and sophomore setter Lauren Plum added her seventh of the season and 14th career-wise with her 45 assists and 10 digs.

"It's never over till it's over," Plum said, "so I'm proud how we battled back. We definitely needed to adjust our play at the break. Liz came alive for us and really helped us get our momentum back. She's one of several terrific hitters that keeps our offense balanced."

Junior libero Haley Jacob posted 20 digs - her third +20 total of the season - and was only one off her season high in a three-set win last month vs. Cal Poly (21).

The Duck defense added 10.5 blocks - its second-highest count of the season - and has posted its four highest totals of the year in as many matches vs. No. 3 USC (11), No. 7 Stanford (11) and No. 6 UCLA (8).

Individually in the category, junior middle blocker Milica Krstojevic tied her blocks season high (6) and led UO in the column for a team-high eighth time this campaign. Plum's blocks tally (4) doubled her previous season high and was one off her career high, and Bergsma added three.

For the Cougars, category leaders included Megan Ganzer (22 kills, .280, 25 points, 1 ace), Camryn Irwin (42 assists), Jordan Levenseller (19 digs, 1 ace), Chelsey Bettinson (5 blocks), Marcelina Glab (1 ace).

In the first set, two two teams stayed within one point of each until 9-8 when WSU surged ahead 13-8, thanks to two of Ganzer's nine kills in the set. UO came back to tie it 14-14, but WSU used a three-point run to go up 17-14, then led by 2-4 points the remainder to a 25-21 win, thanks to its .375 hitting mark and four blocks in the set.

In the second set, the two teams stayed within two points of each other until Oregon trailed 9-11 when WSU went on a 9-2 run to go up 20-11, thanks to three Cougar blocks and four more Duck attack errors. WSU ended the match on a Rachel Todorvich kill to win 25-17, and combined on five blocks in the set, and held a .325-.000 hitting edge.

In the third set, after UO held a 4-3 led early, the Ducks rattled off eighth straight points to go up 11-3, thanks to four of those points from Cougar hitting errors. WSU had only four more sideouts and five more points the rest of the set. In contrast, UO ended the set with seven straight points in the runaway 25-8 decision and included two of UO's three blocks in the period.

In the fourth set, WSU staked only one run of more than one point, a three-point streak that put WSU up briefly, 4-3. However, UO answered with six multi-point runs the rest of the way, including a 7-2 closing stretch in the 25-13 set. Oregon hit a robust .586 for the period with its 19 kills and only two errors among its 29 attempts (and 17 assists by Plum), and added three blocks.

In the fifth set, WSU capitalized on two Duck hitter errors, a kill and block to jump out to a 4-0 advantage. Moments later, Ganzer served her only ace of the match at the set mid-point to give the visitors an 8-4 advantage, while the partisan crowd erupted in boos who thought the serve was long.

Another Coug kill made it 9-5 before Oregon started its deciding comeback. Brenner landed a kill to make it 9-6, and later added one of UO's two straight blocks (while Krstojevic was in on both) to cut WSU's lead to 9-8. UO finally tied the match 11-11 on a Ganzer error, then went ahead 12-11 on an ace by Plum on the third of her six straight serves. Krstojevic added another kill at 13-11, and Brenner had the Ducks' final two pointsvia kills in the 15-12 finale.

Fans can catch a tape delay broadcast of Friday's match by Root Sports Northwest twice locally on Sunday at noon and 11 p.m. and again on Tuesday at noon and 7 p.m.

In other action around the league Friday night, the Huskies swept the Beavers in Corvallis; No. 3 USC swept Utah at home; No. 6 UCLA won 3-1 over Colorado at home; No. 2 California swept ASU in Tempe; and No. 5 Stanford won 3-1 at Arizona.

Looking ahead, UO hosts No. 7 Washington Saturday at 7 p.m. The match is a 'Spike For the Cure' night and fans are asked to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness month.

Promotions-wise, University of Oregon staff who show their UO ID cards will get a G.A. ticket for $2. 500 volleyball trading cards will be given away at the promotions table at the northwest entrance off Franklin Avenue.
