EUGENE - The No. 16 University of Oregon volleyball team (15-7, 8-6) posted its 11th sweep of the season in Sunday's 3-0 decision over Colorado (5-17, 0-15) at Matthew Knight Arena.
Oregon sealed a season sweep of the Buffs with its 25-21, 25-18, 25-18 victory, and raised its home record to 8-3 on the season.
"Today was good," Oregon head coach Jim Moore said. "We came back focused, but still need to work on our energy level. Liz (Brenner) has some great swings, and showed she can be dominating, so it's getting tougher to take her off the court (in the back row rotation)."
Junior and freshman outside hitters Alaina Bergsma and Liz Brenner paced the Duck offense with 13 and 12 kills, respectively, and hit .379 and .526. Bergsma's 11 digs cemented her seventh double-double and fourth in three-set action.
"Our execution was better today," Bergsma said. "Our passing was good, and helped set up Lauren's (Plum) setting."
The middle blocker pair of sophomore Ariana Williams and junior Milica Krstojevic added nine and five kills, respectively, and hit .438 and .714Directing UO to a .360 team hitting mark - its fifth +.300 total in 2011 - sophomore setter Lauren Plum ended with 37 assists and seven digs.
The Poway, Calif., native also climbed two spots Sunday on the Duck all-time career assists list to sixth (2,166), while her career average (11.77) is UO's all-time best (and 0.82 ahead of current leader, Lisa Gemoya, 10.95, 1983-84).
Also on defense, junior libero Haley Jacob paced the team in digs (14) for the 14th time this year.
In the team comparison, UO held healthy advantages in hitting (.360-.182), assists (44-29), aces (3-1) and digs (46-41), while Colorado sported edges in blocks (5-1) and fewest service errors (5-10).
CU category leaders included Kerra Schroeder (12 kills, .294, 15 digs, 12.5 points), Alyssa Valentine (25 assists) and Anicia Santos (3 blocks).
In the first set, Colorado owned its biggest lead of the match at 8-4, when UO soon responded with a 6-0 stretch to go up 10-8. After Oregon upped its lead to 14-10, it held a 2-3 point the rest of the way until Bergsma's sixth kill of the set gave UO a 25-21 win. That four-point final difference was the narrowest Sunday after Colorado logged four of its five blocks on the afternoon.
In the second set, CU led the first 1/3 of the set, until a four- and three-point UO runs gave the Ducks 10-8 and 14-9 leads. Colorado had two- and three-point responses to pull within 16-12 and later 21-17. However, Oregon ended the stanza with three straight points on kills by Plum and Jaklyn Wheeler and block by Wheeler and Krstojevic in the 25-18 set.
In the final set, UO never trailed, and a three-point run early gave UO a 9-5 lead on Haley Jacob's ace. After Colorado drew within 13-10, Oregon answered with a four-point burst to take an 18-11 lead on a Bergsma ace, two kills by Fischer and another by Williams. UO added two more two-point responses in its final six points of the set in the 25-18 clincher.
Every other league match on Saturday and Sunday was decided by sweeps, too, with No. 10 Washington over Arizona in Seattle; No. 6 UCLA over No.5 Stanford in Palo Alto; No. 4 USC over No. 2 California in Berkeley; Washington State over Arizona State in Pullman; and Oregon State over Utah in Corvallis.
Looking ahead, UO heads to the desert to play at Arizona State and Arizona on Saturday and Sunday, November 4 and 6.
