Oregon won a pair of matches at the 2011 Boise State Tournament the weekend of Aug. 19-21, defeating Wyoming on Friday and Boise State on Sunday. The Ducks are off to their best start since they opened the 2007 season 3-0 overall.
In UO's 2-0 neutral-site win over the Cowgirls, junior midfielder Maddy Mercier and freshman forward Bri Pugh scored goals for the Ducks. UO took a 1-0 advantage in the 16th minute when Mercier redirected (into the net) a crossing pass from fellow junior midfielder Julie Armstrong.
Pugh registered her first career goal in the 23rd minute of her first collegiate match. That score was created by junior midfielder Mo Fitzgerald's through-ball into Pugh, who finished low and to the far post. Oregon out-shot Wyoming, 12-7, with junior forward Kelsey Hones recording a team-best four shots. Mercier and Pugh had two shots each. In all, six different Ducks recorded shots.
In Sunday's 2-0 road win over the Broncos, Armstrong and freshman forward Shanelle Simien scored goals to lead UO to victory. The Ducks had the advantage in shots (11-6), shots on goal (5-2) and corner kicks (5-3). Armstrong had a team-high four shots, two of which were on target. The matches' first goal came in the 65th minute, when Armstrong was on the receiving end of an assist from sophomore Achijah Berry. The second-year defender from Seattle, Wash., made an over-lapping run, played the ball back into Armstrong who finished it to the near post.
Armstrong assisted on the second goal which came in the 89th minute. After getting in behind the defense, she drove a shot at the BSU goalkeeper, who deflected it out to the top of the 18-yard box. Simien rebounded the save and fired a shot past the keeper to the far post.
