Ducks Notch Third-Straight with 3-1 Win at Colorado
11/24/13 | Women's Volleyball
BOULDER, Colo. – Liz Brenner and Martenne Bettendorf powered the Ducks' offense with 37 combined kills as the Oregon volleyball team (17-11, 10-8 Pac-12) defeated Colorado 3-1 (29-27, 25-21, 20-25, 25-13) to win its third-consecutive match, Sunday.
Brenner finished with 20 kills and 13 digs for her 14th double-double of the season, the most since Katherine Fischer who finished the 2010 season with the same number. The junior got off to a hot start with seven of those kills coming in Oregon's 29-point first set.
The performance capped an impressive weekend for Brenner, who also had 25 assists and 18 digs in four sets against Utah, Friday.
Bettendorf was one kill away from tying her career high of 18 kills. The Portland, Ore., native had 11 kills in the first two sets, and while the Ducks got away using her in the third set, Bettendorf played a big role in the fourth and final set with another five kills.
Similar to the Utah match, the Ducks' defense was as strong as it has been all season due to a strong blocking presence at the net by middle blockers Ariana Williams and Serena Warner. Williams, who capped 11 blocks on Friday, added a team-high five against Colorado including three solo blocks.
Oregon tallied the first four points of the match with two kills by Bettendorf and two aces by Shellsy Ashen. The lead was short-lived as Colorado came back for its first lead of the night at 10-9. Both teams had the opportunity to take set on set points but neither could convert until Oregon used two-consecutive blocks, both involving Williams, to win the set 29-27.
Both sides of the ball were working for Oregon in the second set early as Oregon's blocking was led by Warner, getting two blocks in Oregon's first 10 points. A 10-0 run gave Oregon its largest lead of the frame at 17-7 but from that point Colorado slowly worked its way back into the match and down only 23-21 late in the set. Coming out of a timeout called by Jim Moore, consecutive kills by Finley and Bettendorf gave the Ducks just enough to win the set, 25-21 and head to intermission with a 2-1 lead.
The third set was somewhat of a lapse for Oregon after controlling a large portion of set two. Colorado outhit the Ducks .419-.150 in the set and went on to win 25-20.
The Ducks were quick to get back on track in the fourth set with the inspired play of Williams who accounted for four of Oregon's first six points. A 12-3 run made the score 18-8 in Oregon's favor and the Ducks continued on to a 25-13 victory in the set.
Amanda Benson notched a team high 18 digs putting her eighth on Oregon's single season list (449), one ahead of Katie Swoboda's number in 2005.
Oregon will begin its final week of the 2013 regular season with a quick turnaround, Wednesday at Washington State. The last home match for the Ducks will be Friday against Oregon State for senior night.
