LOS ANGELES – The No. 10 Oregon volleyball team defeated No. 18 USC in four sets, 25-16, 26-24, 24-26, 25-17.
How It Happened: Oregon (15-3, 5-3 Pac-12) got back to what has helped it be so successful this season, spreading the ball around offensively. The Ducks also bounced back on the defensive end, recording eight blocks and holding a dangerous serving team with only one ace.
Oregon cruised through the first set, clicking on all cylinders, and was heading in the same direction through most of the second set before allowing USC to come back with a 10-1 run to tie the match at 22. The Ducks rallied behind their outside hitters after the scare to take the set 26-24.
The third set went back-and-forth with each team taking small leads but it was a late charge from the Trojans that gave USC life. But it was all Oregon in the fourth set where the Ducks were in control from start to finish.
Oregon finished with four players in double-digit kills with Brenner leading the way at 16 kills followed by Frankie Shebby (11), Kacey Nady (10) and Martenne Bettendorf (10).
What It Means: The win put a halt to Oregon's two-match skid, both losses against ranked opponents. With a 5-3 record in conference, the Ducks are battling in a competitive conference and currently tied with Arizona for third behind the undefeated Stanford and Washington at the top of the table. While Oregon will spend the next four matches at Matthew Knight Arena, the schedule does not get any easier with the Arizona schools up next.
Notes and Numbers: Brenner led the team with 16 kills while recording her 12th double-double of the season…she also tied her season high with 19 digs…Amanda Benson tied her season high with 21 digs…the team's 71 digs is the second-most this season but the most in a four-set match.
Up Next: The Ducks will be back in action for another pair of Wednesday-Friday matches at home. Oregon will face Arizona, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and Arizona State, Friday at 4:30 p.m.
