STANFORD, Calif. – Both doubles teams of Joey Swaysland/Daniel Sardu and Daan Maasland/Simon Stevens recorded wins in the doubles Round of 32 Saturday morning at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Stanford.
Swaysland and Sardu knocked off the No. 9-seeded Adam Glynn and Evan McIntosh of Fresno State 8-7 (3). The two will face the No. 2 seed tomorrow morning in the Round of 16, Washington's team of Emmett A. Egger and Jeffrey Hawke.
Maasland and Stevens – the tournament's No. 9 seed – defeated Jake Douglas and Viktor Farkas of Washington 8-4. They will face Portland's fourth-seeded team of Daniel Alameh and Marlon Brand in the next round.
“Our doubles teams were very good today, we definitely got our mojo back,” head coach Nils Schyllander said. “Joey and Dani played with great energy and had a great win versus a seeded team, and Simon and Daan played very well, too, especially on the big points. Hopefully we can keep it together tomorrow as the competition will only get tougher.”
Brent Chin and Alex Marcinkowski won their consolation doubles match 8-1 over Johan Samuelsson and Alexander G. Santiago of USF.
The remaining Oregon players in the singles main bracket were all knocked out, but the Ducks showed toughness against some stiff competition. Stevens battled, but he fell to California's No. 1-seeded Andre Gorransson 7-5, 6-4.
17th-seeded Jayson Amos took the first set from the No. 9 seed, David Hsu of Stanford, but the sophomore lost in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Ninth-seeded Kevin Farin claimed the first set as well, but he suffered a similar result as Amos and lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
“In singles we battled hard and put ourselves in tight three-set battles against some of the region's best,” Schyllander said. “Definitely a step forward from Tulsa (two weeks ago).”
Swaysland knocked out Trey Strobel of Stanford in the singles consolation bracket by a score of 7-5, 6-3. Maasland also advanced when he took care of Washington's Rishabh Raman 7-5 (5), 6-1.
Chin stormed back in his consolation match to force a third-set tie break, but he ultimately came up short 6-1, 6-7 (6), 1-0 (4) against Gonzaga's Vladimir Mijatovic.
Blake Anthony and Marcinkowski were both defeated in straight sets in their consolation matches. Anthony lost 6-4, 6-0 to Pacific's Eric Spence, and Marcinkowski fell to Marlon Brand of Pacific 6-4, 6-3.
