EUGENE, Ore. – No. 11 Oregon volleyball was dealt its first loss of the season, Friday, falling to No. 1 Stanford in four sets, 25-23, 25-16, 17-25, 25-17.

How It Happened: The Ducks (12-1, 2-1 Pac-12) came out aggressive in the first set, taking an early 4-1 lead and an eventual 14-8 lead. That lead slowly disappeared through the remainder of the set until the Cardinal (13-0, 3-0) tied the match at 22 and went on to win 25-23.

Set two was all Stanford, which never allowed the Ducks to lead in the set, but Oregon came out of intermission looking to make a comeback. Oregon took the third set convincingly, after an 8-2 run put the Ducks up 13-6, setting the stage for a 25-17 victory.

Stanford used two surges in the fourth set, one early and one late, to finish off the match and remain undefeated.

What It Means: Coach Moore said he was excited for the test to measure his young team against the best opponent in the nation. The Ducks were not only able to take a set, but had another within reach before the Cardinal darted in front to snatch an early lead.

For a handful of Ducks, it was the first time playing significant minutes in a Pac-12 road match, let alone in front of 3,044 fans against a top-ranked opponent. The Ducks though, were not intimidated, as evidenced by their ability to take an early lead and persevere after dropping two sets.

Notes and Numbers: Martenne Bettendorf led the team with 14 kills and hit .448…middle blocker Kacey Nady (11) and Serena Warner (10) each finished with double-digit kills…Amanda Benson led all players with 20 digs...Oregon's hitting percentage of .235 was the lowest this season.

Next Up: Oregon will complete the weekend by taking on California, Sunday at 11 a.m. That match will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
