Sardu and Amos Win in Quarters, Advance to Semis at UNLV
11/01/14 | Men's Tennis
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Jayson Amos and Daniel Sardu both won both of their singles matches on Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex to advance to the semifinals tomorrow at the Larry Easley Memorial Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.
How It Happened: Both Amos and Sardu competed in flight one of singles. Sardu won his first match in straight sets over Adrian Legarreta of Grand Canyon 6-2, 6-2. The senior then faced Brian Foley of Boise State in the quarterfinals and defeated the Bronco 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2.
Amos – a sophomore from Mission Viejo, Calif., – took care of both his opponents in straight sets. He beat Mesa Community College's Harry Busby 6-3, 6-2 in the first round and then took care of Philip Kuehnen of Grand Canyon 6-3, 6-4.
Flight two of singles competition saw Alex Marcinkowski fall to Grand Canyon's Mitch Maroscher in the first round by a score of 7-6, 6-1. Brent Chin received a bye in the first round.
Chin got his chance in the quarterfinals, but the junior dropped his match 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-5 to a fellow Pac-12 foe in Arizona's Trevor James.
On the doubles side, Chin and Marcinkowski paired together and lost in the first round to Felix Schumann and Kester Black of NAU 8-3. Amos and Sardu were also a team, but the two were granted a bye in the first round and will not play until tomorrow's quarterfinals.
What It Means: With their two singles wins today, Amos and Sardu now have the top two fall season singles records on the team. Amos leads at 7-2, and Sardu is second with a 4-2 record. Sardu's win over Boise State's Foley was especially impressive considering that Foley went 21-9 in duals last year and helped lead the Broncos to a Mountain West Championship.
Next Up: The quarterfinals and semifinals of doubles along with semifinal singles will be played tomorrow with competition starting at 9 a.m.
