Ducks Roll Over Seattle U 7-0 to open the season
01/10/15 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team cruised to a season-opening victory Saturday morning at the Student Tennis Center with a 7-0 win over Seattle U. UO didn't drop a set the entire match, and freshmen Simon Stevens and Cormac Clissold both enjoyed their first collegiate doubles and singles wins.
How It Happened: The Ducks (1-0) quickly snagged the doubles point thanks to swift 6-2 victories from the No. 1 doubles team of Kevin Farin and Jayson Amos and the No. 3 team of Daniel Sardu and Clissold. With the point already in hand, Daan Maasland and Stevens still finished out their match and won on court two, 7-5.
Maasland quickly dispatched Riley Newman of Seattle U 6-0, 6-2 to earn the first singles point of the match to give the Ducks a 2-0 overall lead. Stevens finished shortly after Maasland and defeated Ian Clare 6-2, 6-0 to put Oregon within one point of clinching the match.
Sardu finished the job for the Ducks and handled the Redhawks' John Stormans to a tune of 6-3, 6-3 to give UO the match.
The rest of the singles matches were played out, and all three went Oregon's way. Farin gutted out a straight-set 6-4, 6-2 victory over Will Topp, Clissold earned the victory 6-3, 6-3 against Connor Leahy and Joey Swaysland logged the 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 6 position against Matt Alderson.
Seattle U falls to 0-1 on the season. They will play Eastern Washington tomorrow in a neutral match at the Student Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
Solid Opener: Oregon winning 7-0 over Seattle U today means that the Ducks have now won 12 season-opening matches in a row. The 7-0 score is also the fourth year in a row that UO has registered a clean sweep in the first match of the year.
Sardu Into 4th Place: With the singles victory on court three, Daniel Sardu moves into sole possession of fourth place in UO history for career singles wins. The senior is 65-31 and now trails Odeg Teig (69-53) for third place by just four wins.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
“We definitely did not come out as sharp as we wanted to. You could tell it was the first match, and we look to play a lot cleaner tennis this afternoon.”
Shortened ITA Format: At least for the non-conference portion of their schedule, the Ducks will be playing their matches with a few new differences that will expedite play:
• No-ad scoring in singles and doubles.
• Three doubles matches played, each match one set to 6, with a tie-break at 6-all.
• Followed (after a 5-minute intermission) by six singles matches, each match 2 out of 3 sets, with tie-breaks at 6-all.
• No warm-up with opponents (in doubles and in singles).
Next Up: The Ducks will grab lunch and prepare to play Eastern Washington at 3 p.m. back at the Student Tennis Center.
