Ducks Shake Up Record Book at UW
02/01/15 | Track and Field
SEATTLE – The Oregon record book was rattled, Saturday, as the track and field team finished strong at the UW Invitational.
Tony James made his Oregon debut on the track in the 60 meters and did not disappoint. The Oregon football running back started the day with a time of 6.81 in the preliminary round, a time that ranks eighth in UO history. The freshman followed that by clocking a 6.71 in the semifinals, moving him past some of the previous dual-sport notables in the event such as Dior Mathis and LaMichael James, all the way to second in school history, tied with Ashton Eaton.
In the finals, James won his heat handily but missed his best time, finishing in 6.73 to take fourth overall.
“It was a good opener for Tony," said head coach Robert Johnson. "As the season continues, he will spend more and more time working out with track and just continue to get better and better.”
Mitch Modin had another strong start in the heptathlon, beginning the day with a big personal best in the 60 hurdles (8.30). The sophomore from Bend, Ore., also tied his indoor PR in the pole vault (14-9/4.50m) before finishing the day with 5,510 points. The total ranks fifth in school history and is currently seventh on the NCAA Indoor qualifying list.
After Greg Skipper set a school record in the weight throw on Friday, Brittany Mann continued to represent the throws group well as she set an indoor best in the shot put, finishing second. Mann unleashed a throw of 51-3.75 (15.64m) on her final attempt which moved her from third to second on the Oregon all-time list.
“It was a good day for the group that made the trip," Johnson said "There were solid performances all around, today, and another great performance last night by Greg.”
Oregon will next compete, Feb.13-14 as the team will split between the Millrose Games, Don Kirby Elite and Husky Classic.
