UO Takes Down Aggies 4-0 In Neutral Match
03/15/15 | Men's Tennis
BOISE, Idaho – The Oregon men's tennis team earned their second neutral site win of the year Saturday afternoon at the Boas Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho, with a 4-0 victory over Utah State. The loss drops Utah State to 14-5 and the Ducks improve to 9-4 on the year.
How It Happened: The Ducks were able to win the doubles point thanks to some gritty play from all three UO teams. The No. 3 team of Daniel Sardu and Jayson Amos took down the Aggies' Jack Swindells and Jaime Barajas 6-4, and Kevin Farin and Simon Stevens sealed the 1-0 lead after outlasting Karan Salwan and Matt Sweet 7-5 on court one.
Daan Maasland and Joey Swaysland were in a dog fight of their own on court two (Oregon led 6-5) when play was stopped.
Maasland didn't have to wait long to get his turn though, as the junior was the first to win in singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Utah State's Dennis Baumgartner, giving Oregon a convincing 2-0 lead.
Amos made it a 3-0 stranglehold for the Ducks with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Barajas on court five. The victory snaps a two-match skid for the sophomore, and also gives him a team-high 16 singles wins on the year (16-7).
Oregon shut the door on the Aggies and put the match to bed when Farin took care of Swindells 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot, securing the 4-0 win for the Ducks.
With the outcome decided and another match on tap tomorrow for UO, the rest of the singles matches were stopped.
Sardu was up 6-3, 6-6 on court three, Stevens trailed 4-6, 3-5 at the No. 4 spot and Clissold split 3-6, 6-2, 0-0 on court six.
The match was scheduled to take place outside, but rain moved the match to Boise State's indoor facilities.
Coming Back Strong: After a strong week of practice, the Ducks flashed their resiliency again and took down a Utah State team who has had a fair amount of early season success.
The three singles winners; Maasland, Amos and Farin, all avenged their singles losses at Pepperdine and locked up the victory for the Ducks with straight-set wins.
Odds and Ends: Stevens maintained his 10-match winning streak with his singles match stopping … Sardu moved into a tie for third place for all-time doubles victories (64) with his win on Saturday. He now is tied with Manuel Kost (2001-05). Tomorrow he will have a chance to tie Odel Teig (65) for second.
Next Up: The Ducks will stay the night in Boise and prepare to play No. 74 Boise State tomorrow at noon (PT).
