Ducks Earn First True Road Win at Boise State
03/16/15 | Men's Tennis
BOISE, Idaho – The Oregon men's tennis team earned their first true road win of the season Sunday afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho, with a 4-2 win over No. 74 Boise State. Daan Maasland clinched the win for the Ducks on court two with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback win over the Broncos' Thomas Tenreiro.
How It Happened: The Broncos took their only lead of the match when they captured the doubles point thanks to two quick victories. Oregon's No. 1 team of Kevin Farin and Simon Stevens were beat by Tenreiro and Lewis Roskilly 6-3, and Jayson Amos and Daniel Sardu were dispatched by Boise State's Brian Foley and Toby Mitchell 6-2.
Maasland and Joey Swaysland led on court two 5-4, but their match went unfinished for the second day in a row.
The loss in doubles refocused the Ducks, and the Green and Yellow came back to take control of the match. Sardu was the first turn it around for UO with a straight-set 6-1, 6-2 win over the Broncos' Mitchell on court three.
Cormac Clissold won at the No. 6 spot and gave the Ducks a 2-1 lead. The freshman took down Boise State's Abe Hewko 6-4, 6-4, giving him his seventh singles victory (7-2) of the season.
The Broncos battled back and tied the match at 2-2 when Farin dropped his match at the No. 1 spot 6-1, 6-4 to Garrett Patton.
Amos made it 3-2 Oregon after he defeated Foley 6-4, 6-2 on court four. Amos won both of his singles matches this weekend in straight sets.
Maasland provided the clincher with his three-set victory over Tenreiro. The junior is now 10-4 on the spring in singles play including a 5-1 mark at the No. 1 position.
Stevens was just beginning his third set against Roskilly (5-7, 7-6 (2), 1-0) on court five when play was stopped.
Breaking Through: Oregon entered the day 0-3 when losing the doubles point, but the Ducks changed that trend today thanks to consistent singles play that grinded down the Broncos. Even though Boise State is just 5-10 on the year, UO beat a team on the road that has championship pedigree (three-consecutive Mountain West Championships).
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
“We were a complete no show in doubles play today. I guess it worked as a wake-up call. The chaps did a real good job taking it to the Broncos in singles play. We played to win and did not wait for them to give it to us.”
Next Up: Oregon will return to the Student Tennis Center and play host to Pacific on Monday, March 23 at 11 a.m. The Ducks will then begin Pac-12 play with a road trip at the Los Angeles schools that same weekend (March 27-28).
