UO Concludes Non-Conference Play With Emphatic 7-0 Win
03/23/15 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Ducks concluded their non-conference slate Monday morning at the Student Tennis Center with a 7-0 win over the University of the Pacific, putting Oregon at 11-4 on the year. UO will enter Pac-12 competition with a perfect 8-0 record at home.
How It Happened: Oregon was pushed for the doubles point, but the Ducks were able to finish the job thanks to wins from Daniel Sardu and Jayson Amos (6-1) at the No. 3 position and Daan Maasland and Joey Swaysland on court three (6-4).
Almost all six courts in singles saw the Ducks fall behind momentarily in the early going of the first sets, but UO rallied and cruised past Pacific in all six matches.
Sardu made it a 2-0 lead for the Ducks when his opponent, Alex Hamilton, was forced to retire from the match due to injury. Sardu led 6-3, 1-1 when the match ended.
Amos won his third singles match in a row with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 position over the Tigers' Daniel Alameh to push the lead to 3-0. The sophomore now has a team-high 18 wins on the year (18-7).
Simon Stevens clinched the match for the Green and Yellow thanks to a 6-4, 6-2 performance to defeat Pacific's Jose Chamba. With the win, the freshman extended his singles winning streak to 11 matches.
Cormac Clissold added to the total with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Marlon Brand, Maasland followed with a 7-5, 6-2 victory against Miguel Diaz and Swaysland rounded out the flawless day for UO after a 7-6 (6), 6-0 win over Bernardo Oliveira.
Sardu Tied for Second: With his doubles wins today, Sardu is now tied with Odel Teig (1999-2003) for the most career doubles wins in school history with 65. He now only trails Robin Cambier (93, 2010-14).
Right at Home in the STC: Once again, the Ducks dominated an opponent at home in the Student Tennis Center. Today's 7-0 win is the fifth time this season that Oregon has won by such a margin. All five of those wins came at home.
Conclusion of Non-Conference Play: UO will enter Pac-12 play with an 11-4 record. More than half of their wins (6) came against opponents ranked in the top-75 of the ITA's team rankings. The Ducks were 6-1 in January, 2-3 in February and so far 3-0 in March.
Quotable: Junior Daan Maasland
On what the win means going into Pac-12 play...
“It means a lot. It was good that we got this win, now we can focus on Pac-12 play. It was good to play again after the exams. It wasn't the easiest match as a team; some of us didn't start very well, but we found a way and it shows that we are good fighters.”
On playing during spring break. No school, just tennis…
“It's nice. We have a lot of time to do stuff that we don't normally have time for…It will be nice when we go to Los Angeles and we won't have to miss school. We will go there with our minds just on tennis; it should be a good trip.”
Next Up: The Ducks will head to California to play the Los Angeles schools this weekend. Oregon will play UCLA at noon on Friday, March 27 in a match that will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. UO will then face USC the following day at noon.
