Ducks Unable to Take Down No. 15 UCLA on the Road
03/28/15 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – The No. 51 Oregon men's tennis team was unable to take down Pac-12 powerhouse No. 15 UCLA Friday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The 7-0 defeat drops the Ducks to 11-5 (0-1 Pac-12) on the year, and improves the Bruins to 10-6 (1-0 Pac-12).
How It Happened: The Ducks saw the doubles point go to the Bruins when UCLA's No. 1 team of Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell took down UO's Daan Maasland and Joey Swaysland 6-1, and Jayson Amos and Daniel Sardu soon after fell to Dennis Mkrtchian and Austin Rapp 6-4 on court two.
The home team made it a 2-0 lead when Brent Chin – who was seeing his first action of the spring season – was tripped up Ryoto Tachi 6-1, 6-1 on court six.
UCLA grabbed the next two points and clinched the match when Maasland was defeated by the No. 26-ranked singles player in Mkrtchian at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-3, and Sardu lost to the No. 101-ranked player, Martin Redlicki, on court two 6-3, 6-3 to decide the fate of the match.
With the match decided, the Ducks fought hard in the other three singles matches that ended up being three-set nail biters that all went in the Bruins' favor.
Amos won the first set against the Bruins' Sell, but the Mission Viejo, Calif., native was unable to claw his way to a victory, losing 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 (12-10) in a heartbreaker of a third set.
Cormac Clissold's match unfortunately ended in similar fashion. The freshman was unable to seize the victory as UCLA's Rapp barely squeaked by with a score of 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8).
Swaysland was deadlocked in a battle of his own on court five, but the senior fell just short of the win after a 6-7 (0), 7-6 (6), 1-0 (10-1) result went to Di Giulio, completing the sweep for Bruins.
Bright Spots: Despite getting swept, the Ducks in the final three singles matches fought tooth and nail to the end. Amos, Clissold and Swaysland all took the opening sets in their respective matches, but fell victim to shortened 10-point third sets. All three matches might have seen different results if the third sets were played out to their traditional length.
Next Up: The Ducks will have a short turnaround until their next match against No. 9 USC, who they will play tomorrow at noon at the Trojans' Marks Stadium.
