EUGENE – After a strong start, the second-ranked Oregon acrobatics and tumbling team fell 282.025-280.180 to No. 1 Baylor at Matthew Knight Arena on Thursday night.
How It Happened: The Ducks came out firing, picking up the early momentum with wins in the compulsory and acro events.
In compulsories, Oregon snagged wins in three of the four heats, scoring a season-high 9.75 in acro, 9.85 in pyramid and 9.95 in toss. The Ducks scored a 9.30 in tumbling to tie Baylor in the heat and take the event, 38.85-38.40.
The Ducks continued their strong performance into acro, taking the event, 29.35-28.90 behind a pair of 9.80's in the 5 and 6-element.
Baylor would take back the lead in the pyramid event. Oregon scored a perfect 10 in heat three to follow up a 9.70 in heat two, but neither was enough to make up for an 8.10 in the first heat. The Bears won the event, 29.70-27.80, to take a 97.00-96.00 lead into halftime.
The remainder of the meet was tightly contested, as Oregon tied the Bears in the toss event at 29.35 each to start off second half. The Ducks earned wins in the second and third heats with a 9.70 and season-high 9.95.
The Bears edged the Ducks in the tumbling, 56.875-56.850. After tying in the duo pass and falling, 9.30-9.10, in the triple pass, Oregon grabbed an 8.90-8.60 win in the quad pass. Baylor responded, scraping by the Ducks in the aerial pass, 9.775-9.75. Oregon couldn't match Baylor's 10 in the 6-element, but the Ducks finished off the event strong, earning a 9.80-9.70 victory in the open pass.
The Ducks had a chance for a walk-off in the team event, but came up short, 98.80-97.98, allowing Baylor to seal the win.
Quotable – Head Coach Chelsea Shaw: “I'm very proud of our kids. We were coming off of a very difficult week with a lot of injuries to some of our key athletes, so we made a lot of last-minute changes just last night. For them to do what they did today, we were very proud. It wasn't ideal to come away with a loss, but now they're going to come together, put their heads down and work harder as we head into nationals.”
Senior Night: Thursday's meet marked Senior Night for the Oregon acrobatics and tumbling team. Nicole Seybold, Sydnee Walton, Alexis McCallister, Jordyn Fox, Haley Garelick and Shelby Armstrong were each honored before the meet.
Up Next: The Ducks wrap up the regular season on Monday when they head to Asuza, Calif., for a road meet at Azusa Pacific.
