
Modin Leads Decathlon After Day One

EUGENE, Ore. – After the first day of the decathlon the Oregon Ducks are in 1-2-3 position at the Oregon Relays, Thursday.
Mitch Modin leads with a score of 3,916, winning four of the five contested events. Modin started the day by tying his personal best in the 100 at 10.89, albeit with a 3.3 m/s tailwind. He dropped behind his teammate Joe Delgado after the long jump but quickly rebounded in the shot put with a winning mark of 43-10.75 (13.38m) to retake the lead. The Bend, Ore., native finished the day by clearing 6-5.5 (1.97m) in the high jump and running the 400 in 49.35 to end the day with a 74 point lead.
Delgado is second behind Modin with the highest first-day total of his career, 3,842. He started by running 11.23 in the 100 to take second place before winning the long jump with a mark of 22-7.75/6.90m, both of which are personal bests. The final PR of the day came in the high jump with a clearance of 6-3.25 (1.91m).
Blake Kemp also started strong with a personal best in the 100 (11.18) before tying his best mark in the high jump (6-3.25/1.91m). Kemp sits third after the first day with a total of 3,629.
The final five events of the decathlon will resume Friday at noon, with the rest of the Oregon Relays starting at 1:55 p.m.
