STANFORD, Calif. – Redshirt senior Jeramy Elkaim led a group of Ducks distance runners at the Stanford Invitational, Saturday night, winning his heat of the 5,000 while three other Oregon athletes set personal bests.
Elkaim started the race in the middle of the pack, slowly moving up as the race progressed. With a few laps remaining, the two-time All-American was in fourth place, and up to second by the bell lap. The leader John Dressel created some separation with 300 meters to go to but Elkaim responded quickly, showing his strength as he made a pass heading into the final turn before finishing in 13:47.40.
Alli Cash and Molly Grabill both set personal bests in the top sections of the 5,000 and 10,000, respectively. Cash took 14th with a time of 16:00.90 while Grabill was 16th in 33:13.64. Eugene, Ore., native Maggie Schmaedick also competed in the 10,000, finishing in 34:06.47.
Matthew Melancon was the top Oregon finisher in the men's 10,000, setting a personal best of 29:05.34 in seventh. Teammate Bryan Fernandez finished in 29:37.33.
