Battle of Pac-12 Unbeatens Up Next in Pullman
01/06/17 | Men's Basketball
Only three unbeaten teams in Pac-12 play will remain by the time the weekend rolls around. Two of those teams - Oregon and Washington State - will square off Saturday at 4 p.m. in Pullman (Pac-12 Networks).
THE STARTING FIVE
1 - Oregon is 14-2 overall and 3-0 in Pac-12 play for the first time since the 2012-13 season, which was Dana Altman's third year in Eugene. That NCAA Sweet 16 squad went 18-2 before picking up its third loss, and started 7-0 in Pac-12 play.
2 - Oregon's current 12-game winning streak is the school's longest since the Ducks won the first 13 games of the 2013-14 season. It is the fourth-longest active winning streak in the NCAA (through Jan. 4).
3 - Milestone wins. Dec. 30 versus USC, Dana Altman recorded his 700th career victory as a head coach, including stops at the Division I and junior college levels. One game later versus Washington (Jan. 4), Oregon recorded the 1,600th victory in program history.
4 - Oregon has held 14-of-16 opponents under 70 points this season. The only two teams to eclipse 70 points are Army (77) in the season opener and UCLA (87) on Dec. 28.
5 - A little defense goes a long way. Under Dana Altman, Oregon is 114-14 when holding opponents under 70 points, including an 82-6 mark the last five seasons.
+1 The Ducks lead the nation at 7.5 blocks per game, and also lead the nation in total blocks with 120. Individually, Chris Boucher is 11th nationally in blocks per game (2.9), with Jordan Bell 34th (2.2 bpg).
SEASON TRENDS
Now that the calendar has flipped to 2017, here's look at some trends from the first two months of the season. The Ducks are:
* 12-0 when blocking more shots than opponents
* 12-0 when leading at the half
* 11-0 when scoring 70 or more points
* 11-0 when having more assists than opponents
* 11-0 when committing fewer fouls than opponents
* 11-1 when outrebounding opponents
WINNING STREAK NOTES
In the last 70 years, the Ducks have only had two winning streaks longer than their current 12-game set. Oregon opened both the 2013-14 and 2006-07 seasons with 13 consecutive wins. All of Oregon's winning streaks of 14 games or longer date to 1947 and earlier. Many current Division I teams are part of those streaks, such as Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, California, UCLA, Portland, Gonzaga and others, but there are a number of curious club and AAU teams that universities used to play in the early days of collegiate basketball. Included among that category are the Walla Walla YMCA, Multnomah Athletic Club, Union Oil and a club called Fees Rollerdome. Oregon's all-time longest winning streaks:
15 games 2-14-1912 to 1-31-1913
14 games 1-31-1925 to 2-19-1926
12-27-1926 to 1-24-1927
12-21-1935 to 1-17-1936
12-3-1937 to 1-14-1938
2-26-1946 to 1-3-1947
13 games 2-24-1939 to 12-12-1939
11-10-2006 to 12-31-2006
11-8-2013 to 1-2-2014
12 games 2-7-1928 to 1-8-1929
11-22-2016 to 1-4-2017
UNIVERSITY NETS MILESTONE
The Ducks earned the 1,600th win in school history Jan. 4 at Washington. More than a tenth of those wins (168) have come in the last seven seasons under coach Dana Altman.
DORSEY LEADS DUCKS' BIG NIGHT AT UW
Tyler Dorsey made a career-best eight three-pointers to lead Oregon's 83-61 win over Washington Jan. 4 in Seattle. He scored 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 8-of-12 from downtown. He made his final six field goal attempts of the game, including five three-pointers. His eight threes were the most by a Duck since Tajuan Porter set the school record with 10 Nov. 26, 2006, versus Portland State.
BROOKS NAMED PAC-12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK; USBWA AND NCAA.COM NATIONAL POW
Naismith and Wooden Award National Player of the Year candidate Dillon Brooks earned his second career Pac-12 Player of the Week award following his performances against UCLA and USC last week, in voting conducted by media who cover the league. He previously won the award on Feb. 1, 2016. He was also named the national player of the week by both the USBWA and ncaa.com. The 6-7 junior forward from Mississauga, Ontario, averaged 25.5 points on 60 percent shooting (18-of-30), 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game as Oregon opened Pac-12 play with home victories over previously unbeaten and nationally ranked teams UCLA and USC. Brooks' standout play helped extend the NCAA Division I's second-longest active home court winning streak to 35 consecutive games. Brooks' breakout week began with a then season-high 23 points, including the game-winning three-pointer with 0.8 seconds left to knock off No. 2 UCLA, 89-87, on Wednesday. The momentum carried over to Friday's 84-61 win over No. 22 USC as Brooks scored a season-best 28 points in just 24 minutes on 9-of-10 field goals, including a perfect 4-of-4 behind the arc. Following a slow start to the season, including missing the first three games due to off-season foot surgery, Brooks currently ranks 17th in the Pac-12 in scoring at 14.3 points per game.
BROOKS CLIMBS SCORING LIST
Dillon Brooks is nearing Oregon's top 20 in career scoring. The first UO player to reach 1,000 career points as a sophomore, Brooks comes into the Washington State game with 1,234 career points (t-22nd). He passed Bob Hamilton (1,183/1943-46) and Dick Wilkins (1,186/1944-48) Dec. 28 versus UCLA. Brooks is currently tied for 22nd with A.D. Smith (1,234/1995-00). No. 20 Elgin Cook (1,259/2013-16) and Maarty Leunen (1,259/2004-08) are next, with No. 19 Terrell Brandon (1,263/1989-91) just four points beyond them.
BELL BACK-TO-BACK
Jordan Bell established career highs in back-to-back games. He scored 16 points (with 12 rebounds) Dec. 17 against UNLV and then upped his career best to 23 points Dec. 20 against Fresno State. He followed that with 13 points Dec. 28 against No. 2 UCLA, and then garnered his second career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds Jan. 4 at UCLA. Bell is shooting 68.1 percent from the field (32-of-47) in his last six games.
IN THE POLLS
Dating back to last season, Oregon has been ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 for 17 consecutive weeks. That is the third-longest streak in school history behind 21 weeks over the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons and 18 weeks in the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons.
