Ducks Fall at No. 1 Stanford
10/19/17 | Women's Soccer
STANFORD, Calif. — No. 1 Stanford scored twice in the first half on goals that were just out of the reach of Oregon's goalkeeper and then added another pair of goals in the second half to defeat the Ducks 4-0 Thursday night at Cagan Stadium.
The Cardinal (14-1, 7-0) scored three of their goals from outside the box, as the Ducks (7-8, 1-6) did a good job of preventing Stanford from running free in their end of the field.
How It Happened: Stanford's Catarina Macario scored twice in the first half on goals that clipped off the fingertips of Duck goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir. Macario opened the scoring in the 20th minute by drilling a free kick from 30 yards out that was just out of Hinriksdottir's grasp.
Macario added her second goal on a remarkable strike outside the box in the 40th minute on another ball that grazed off Hinriksdottir's fingertips.
The Cardinal also got a goal from Kyra Carusa in the 57th minute and another from Jaye Boissiere in the 69th minute.
Who Stood Out: Both of Macario's goals came with a high degree of difficulty. In particular, the second goal came on a ball that never struck the ground on Oregon's side of the field. She also had an assist on Thursday.
Despite the score, Hinriksdottir made some strong plays in net and finished with five saves. Mia Costa made several runs off the back line and led the Ducks with two shots.
Oregon also had three corner kicks to Stanford's two.
What It Means: The Ducks have played the No. 1 team in the nation twice this season – Thursday and Sept. 28 vs. then-No. 1 UCLA.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"I'm proud of our effort and attitude today. We were able to make the No. 1 team in the nation play direct and change their style. There were some real positives that we can build off for Cal."
Notable: Mia Costa wore No. 22 again on Thursday to honor teammate Brianne Parsons. Parsons and her family lost their Santa Rosa home to the fires in Northern California earlier this month. … The match referee inadvertently ran into Sofia Chambers in the 24th minute and the hard collision knocked Chambers out of the match, which could be a concern for Sunday. … The Cardinal played without star midfielder Andi Sullivan who was called up to the U.S. National Team. … Stanford has yet to yield a goal at home this season.
Up Next: Oregon stays in the Bay Area to face No. 16 California Sunday at 11 a.m. (Pac-12 Networks).
