THIS WEEK
The 25th-ranked Ducks will stay on the road this week after dropping a pair of matches at No. 5 USC and No. 10 UCLA last weekend to open Pac-12 play. Oregon will travel to Utah (Friday, 2 pm) and Arizona (Sunday, 11 am) this weekend before returning to Eugene to wrap up the regular season with a trio of Pac-12 matches on its home courts. Senior Jayson Amos remains tied with Robin Cambier (2009-12) for the most singles wins in UO history with 90 as the Ducks head to Salt Lake City, Utah, to open up the two-match weekend.
HOW TO FOLLOW
Niether match this weekend will be featured on a live stream, but links to live results for both matches will be available on the men's tennis schedule on goducks.com. Doubles will be played first, followed shortly by singles play on all six courts. Updates will be provided during matches on Twitter via @OregonMTennis.
AMOS ONE AWAY FROM UO WINS RECORD
In his final season with the Ducks, senior Jayson Amos is one win away from becoming the all-time singles wins leader in Oregon men's tennis history. With three wins at the SD Invite, Amos ran his career win total to 90 to pull into a tie with Robin Cambier (2009-12) for the most in program history. At 90-32, Amos' career winning percentage of .738 is currently the best of any player in the top 15 in career wins. The native of Mission Viejo, Calif., is also one of only two players in UO history to have three straight seasons of at least 22 singles wins, joining Cambier, and fell just one singles win short of the all-time single-season record with a 28-6 mark last year. In doubles, Amos is tied for fifth in UO history with 64 career wins.
The Ducks came away winless in a pair of matches at No. 5 USC and No. 10 UCLA last weekend, but showed impressive toughness and proved that they have the depth and talent to compete with the top teams in the country.
March 31 - #5 USC 5, #23 Oregon 0
After USC claimed the doubles point, the Ducks played the Trojans tough in singles and put up a fight on all six courts, but USC was able to win four matches to seal the win. Thomas Laurent put up a terrific fight against No. 21 Brandon Holt (USC) at the top court. Laurent won the first set, 6-4, before Holt grabbed the second, 6-3, and the two were tied at 4-4 in the deciding set when the match was clinched. At No. 6, freshman Ty Gentry earned a 6-3 first-set win over Riley Smith (USC) before dropping the second, 4-6, and was tied, 3-3, at the conclusion of the match.
April 1 - #10 UCLA 4, #23 Oregon 3
The Ducks opened the match by dropping the doubles point once again, and UCLA opened up a 3-0 lead with two quick singles wins. The Ducks then began to mount a furious comeback. Junior Akihiro Tanaka continued to play well for the Ducks, earning a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win on No. 3 over Evan Zhu (UCLA) to put Oregon on the board. Freshman Ty Gentry pulled UO within a point, 3-2, on No. 6 with a gritty performance, edging out UCLA's Maxime Cressy, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Perhaps the match of the day came on the top court, where the Ducks' Thomas Laurent faced off against No. 11 Gage Brymer (UCLA). Laurent edged Brymer, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-1, to tie the match at 3-3. The deciding point came down to No. 4, where senior Jayson Amos took on UCLA's Logan Staggs. After dropping the first set, 7-6 (3), Amos mounted a comeback with a thrilling 7-6 (5) win in the second. With the match on the line, Staggs was able to edge Amos, 6-4, to secure the victory for the Bruins.
LAURENT SHATTERS UO CONSECUTIVE WINS RECORD
Sophomore Thomas Laurent has enjoyed a stellar start to the dual-match season, winning his first 18 singles matches to destroy the previous UO record for consecutive singles matches won of 15. Laurent broke the mark previously set by Simon Stevens (2015) and Robin Cambier (2012) with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Nicolas Moreno de Alboran of UC Santa Barbara on March 5, earning Pac-12 Player of the Week honors in the process, and added two more in UO wins over SDSU and Iowa in the SD Invite to extend his record. His incredible run came to an end with a loss to 38th-ranked Constantin Schmitz of then-No. 30 Tulane in the finals of the SD Invite. Laurent is now 15-1 in dual matches this spring, all at the No. 1 spot, and 25-3 overall in 2016-17. His 25 wins this season are good for third in UO single-season history, and he needs just two more to tie Swen Swinnen (2004-05) for the most in a single season. For his career, Laurent is 44-9 (.830) overall, 34-7 (.829) in dual matches and an astounding 19-1 (.950) at the top singles spot.
CLISSOLD & LAURENT SHINING IN DOUBLES
The duo of Thomas Laurent and Cormac Clissold has been as steady as they come since the two teamed up for the first time in 2016. The pair is now 32-6 (.842) all-time together, putting them in sixth on the Oregon all-time doubles list. The duo is 17-5 together this season and 12-4 in dual matches, and they set the program single-season record last year with 15 consecutive wins. The pair of Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno is right behind with an all-time record of 25-6 (.806), good for 11th on the UO all-time list.
IN THE RANKINGS
After slotting in at No. 25 in the latest ITA team rankings, the Ducks have now appeared in the top 25 in seven consecutive weeks and have reached as high as No. 21. Thomas Laurent enjoyed a 12-spot jump to No. 28 in the latest singles rankings after upsetting the 11th-ranked player in the country last weekend at UCLA. The duo of Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno is currenlty ranked 79th in the latest doubles rankings.
SCHYLLANDER EARNS WIN NO. 200
Nils Schyllander reached a significant milestone with a 4-0 win over Fresno State on February 9. The win marked the 200th of Schyllander's career, with all 200 coming at the University of Oregon. Now in his 11th season at the helm of the Oregon men's tennis program, Schyllander has elevated the Ducks to a new level of success and now sits at 209 career wins. Since the Pac-10 became the Pac-12 in 2011, Schyllander's teams have gone 98-45 (.675), and have won at least 15 matches each season since 2012. The Ducks took fifth in the Pac-12 last year for the second straight year, and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons. Oregon now looks to build on last year's first-ever NCAA Tournament win as it returns six of its seven top contributors from last season's team.
