NO. 25 OREGON TOOK DOWN UTAH, 4-0, ON FRIDAY TO EARN ITS FIRST PAC-12 WIN OF THE SEASON
SALT LAKE CITY – The 25th-ranked Oregon men's tennis team earned its first Pac-12 victory of the season on Friday afternoon with a 4-0 win over Utah at Eccles Tennis Center.
How it Happened: After dropping the doubles point in losses at No. 5 USC and No. 10 UCLA last weekend, the Ducks (15-4, 1-2 Pac-12) claimed the early advantage over the Utes (14-7, 0-3 Pac-12) with wins on two of the three courts to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Jayson Amos and freshman Ty Gentry teamed up to squeeze out a 7-5 win on the top court, and sophomore Thomas Laurent and junior Cormac Clissold won by the same score on No. 2 to clinch the point.
In singles, junior Simon Stevens snapped a three-match losing streak to stake the Ducks to a 2-0 lead. Stevens took down Utah's Dan Little, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot for the first singles win of the day for Oregon.
Laurent, ranked 28th in singles and coming off a win over the No. 11 player in the country last weekend, continued his stellar play at the No. 1 spot to make it 3-0, Oregon, taking down the Utes' David Micevski, 6-2, 6-4, to win his 26th singles match of the season and move within one win of tying the UO single-season record.
Junior Akihiro Tanaka clinched the match for Oregon on the third court, beating Santiago Sierra (Utah), 7-5, 6-4, to seal the win and move to 13-3 in dual matches this season.
When the match was clinched, Amos was down 4-1 in the third set on No. 4, Clissold led 3-2 in the third set on No. 5 and Gentry was trailing 5-4 in the second set on No. 6 after winning the first set, 7-5.
What it Means: The Ducks rebounded nicely from a winless trip to Los Angeles last weekend and earned their first conference win of the season. The 4-0 win marked the ninth shutout of the spring for Oregon.
Laurent Continues to Roll: With yet another singles win at the No. 1 spot, Laurent is now one win shy of tying the single-season program record and is tied with Amos (2015-16) for second. Laurent is now 26-3 in singles this season and 16-1 in dual matches, all coming at the No. 1 spot. For his career, the Montpellier, France, native is 45-9 overall, 35-7 i9n dual matches and 20-1 at the No. 1 spot.
Notable: Amos remains at 90 career singles wins and needs just one more to become the winningest player in UO history … Clissold and Laurent improved to 18-5 in doubles this season and 13-4 in dual matches … Gentry and Amos earned their third win in three matches playing doubles together.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
"The boys did a good job adjusting to the elevation; they stayed positive the whole way and executed the big points throughout the whole match. Now we need to re-fuel and get ready for some action in the desert on Sunday."
Up Next: The Ducks will head to Tuscon to face Arizona on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT.
