LOS ANGELES – The No. 2 ranked Oregon softball team avoided a sweep at No. 9 UCLA with an 11-4 win on Sunday afternoon at Easton Stadium.
The Ducks (36-2, 9-2 Pac-12) were held scoreless in the first two games of the series but the bats exploded for 11 runs on 11 hits on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After being shutout on Friday and Saturday in the series, Oregon's bats woke up on Sunday in the finale.
In the third inning, the Ducks batted around the lineup and scored six runs on six hits and a UCLA error. Alexis Mack walked to start the inning and moved to second on a bunt single by Danica Mercado. After a pop out for the first out, Nikki Udria ripped a double to left center to score both Mack and Mercado. After another pop out for the second out, Mia Camuso lined a RBI single up the middle to score Udria. An error put a second runner on base for designated player Madi Bishop, who belted a three-run homer to left to give the Ducks a 6-0 lead.
After UCLA scored twice in the fourth, Oregon answered with three runs in the fifth without a single hit. The Ducks scored twice on back-to-back fielder's choice grounders before an error allowed another run to come home.
Oregon added two more runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer from Udria. UCLA scored twice in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback.
IN THE CIRCLE: Miranda Elish started for the Ducks and allowed two runs on six hits in three innings with no walks and two strikeouts. After the Bruins tallied three straight doubles in the fourth, Oregon brought on Megan Kleist. The sophomore earned the win after giving up two runs on three hits in four innings with no walks and two strikeouts.
AT THE DISH: Oregon's bats exploded on Sunday. Nikki Udria went a team-high 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a homer. Danica Mercado had a pair of hits and scored three runs. Madi Bishop belted a three-run homer for the Ducks.
