Oregon clinched a series win with a run-rule victory on Friday at Stanford.
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 3 Oregon softball team defeated Stanford for the 15th straight time with an 8-0 run-rule win on Friday in the second game of a three-game series.
The Ducks (46-6, 16-6 Pac-12) tallied eight runs on five hits with no errors while the Cardinal posted no runs on one hit with four errors.
HOW IT HAPPENED: While Oregon needed big sixth and seventh innings to defeat Stanford on Thursday, the Ducks jumped out in front early on Friday.
Alexis Mack drew a one-out walk and moved to second when Gwen Svekis was hit by a pitch, her third HBP of the series. Both moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt and then both scored on a two-run single by freshman Shannon Rhodes. Fellow freshman, Mia Camuso, then singled to score Rhodes later in the frame to give the Ducks a 3-0 lead three outs into the game.
Mack scored again in the third, using her speed to pressure the Cardinal. The sophomore again drew a walk and then stole second. The throw to second from the catcher hit the dirt, which allowed Mack to advance to third on the play. Minutes later, a wild pitch allowed Mack to score without a single ball put in play.
Oregon manufactured another run in the fourth inning. After a single, fielder's choice and an error, the Ducks had runners at the corners with one out. Jenna Lilley lofted a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Sammie Puentes from third.
Oregon added three more runs in the fifth to set up the run-rule victory. Mack singled, stole second and scored on a Rhodes RBI single to center. The Ducks scored two more runs on a fielder's choice when Stanford threw the ball away allowing both Rhodes and April Utecht to come in.
IN THE CIRCLE: Miranda Elish tossed a one-hit shutout to earn the win for the Ducks. Elish allowed just one walk in addition to the one hit over five innings with four strikeouts. The freshman is now 9-0 on the season.
AT THE DISH: Alexis Mack singled, drew two walks and scored three runs for the Ducks. Shannon Rhodes had a team-high two hits.
UP NEXT: Oregon goes for the sweep of the Cardinal at noon on Saturday on Pac-12 Networks.
