EUGENE, Ore. - After competing in a selection camp this week at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, guard Sabrina Ionescu has been named to the USA U23 National Team.
Ionescu is the only rising sophomore selected for the 12-member roster out of the 35 total players invited to the selection camp.
"What an honor it is for Sabrina to be named to the U23 national team," said head coach Kelly Graves. "There was an incredible amount of talent on display at the selection camp and for her to be one of the 12 named to the roster shows how well she is playing and what kind of competitor she is."
This is the third USA national team for Ionescu in her young basketball career. She also competed with the U16 and U17 squads while in high school. Ionescu won gold medals at both the 2013 FIBA U16 Americas Championship and the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship.
The USA U23 team will compete at the U23 Four Nations Tournament, Aug. 12-15, in Tokyo, Japan. The USA will take on teams from Australia, Canada and Japan.
Louisville head coach Jeff Walz will serve as the head coach of the U23 team, assisted by Princeton head coach Courtney Banghart and Western Kentucky head coach Michelle Clark-Heard.
Sophomore forward Erin Boley, who will have to sit out this season for the Ducks after transferring from Notre Dame, also competed at the selection camp. She was named an alternate for the U23 team.
Ionescu joins a long list of Oregon players who have competed internationally this summer. Forward Ruthy Hebard, guard Anneli Maley and guard Aina Ayuso recently finished play at the FIBA U19 World Championship, with Hebard helping USA to a silver medal. Guard Maite Cazorla led Spain to a gold medal at the FIBA U20 Div. A European Championship while incoming forward Satou Sabally and Germany took gold in Div. B of the same tournament. Aysuo also played with Spain in a FIBA 3-on-3 event in China.
