UO's bench scores 56 in 84-46 win over ODU.
FRISCO, Texas – On Thanksgiving Day, everybody wearing green and yellow was fed.
Oregon's bench put up 56 points Thursday, outscoring Old Dominion's entire team in an 84-46 win on the final day of the Hoopfest Women's Challenge at Comerica Center.
The Ducks (8-0) played their third game in five days, and with one more leg of an extended road trip at Auburn on Sunday, head coach Kelly Graves was able to lean on his deep bench with only one starter playing over 20 minutes.
"I think we played a heck of a lot better than we did the other day," Graves said. "It was nice we rested a lot of our starters and divvied out the minutes. So we should be pretty fresh going to Auburn, which is what we wanted. Our schedule amps up now."
UO's bench combined to go 20-of-28 (71 percent) from the field, getting a game-high 18 points from Astera Tuhina and a career-high 15 from Ehis Etute. Senior Amina Muhammad, who went up against her younger sister in ODU sophomore guard Nisaa Muhammad, added 10 points to round out three reserves to score in double figures.
"It was great to see Astera play so well," added Graves. "It was great to see Amina have a heck of a game and a really nice tournament in front of her family and friends, in front of her sister today. And then Ehis came in and did a great job.
"It's nice to have that comfort knowing that you've kids that can come in and make a difference."
Muhammad went a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor while grabbing six boards, dishing out three assist and tying her career high with three steals. The DeSoto, Texas, native combined to go 7-for-7 from the field over the two-game tournament.
Sofia Bell was the lone Duck to see over 20 minutes of action, scoring all 11 of her points in the first half while drilling three 3-pointers to go with five rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
How It Happened: After falling behind 4-0, Oregon went on an 8-1 run that included 3-pointers from both Mia Jacobs and Bell. The Ducks closed the quarter by scoring 10 of the last 12 points over the final four minutes to take a 20-11 lead after 10 minutes. Bell was a perfect 3-for-3 in the frame, knocking down a pair of triples on her way to eight first-quarter points.
Tuhina came off the bench to score eight points in the second quarter, going 4-for-4 from the field in helping UO shoot 47 percent. Bell and Jacobs each connected from deep range to help the Ducks outscore ODU 21-14 in the second quarter, closing the half on 6-0 run to take a 41-25 lead into the locker room.
Oregon's defense stifled ODU in the third quarter, holding the Monarchs to 3-for-15 shooting while forcing eight turnovers. UO's bench led the way offensively in the quarter, accounting for 16 of its 18 points with eight coming from Etute. An 11-1 burst broke the game open and gave the Ducks a 23-point lead at 54-31 and later led by 24 through 30 minutes.
The Ducks cruised to the finish by outscoring Old Dominion 25-11 in the fourth quarter with Tuhina leading the way with nine of her 18 points, going 3-for-4 from the field in the frame. Muhammad added six points and hit all three of her field goal attempts, with the Ducks shooting 69 percent in the fourth and 56 percent in the second half.
Notable: Oregon's 8-0 start is its best since also starting 8-0 in the 2020-21 season, and the third 8-0 start under Graves … The UO defense forced 22 turnovers behind 10 steals, the seventh time this season forcing 20-plus turnovers and double-digit steals … Tuhina left the game late in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury.
