Arizona Holds Off Oregon 3-1
09/23/17 | Women's Soccer
TUCSON, Ariz. —Arizona scored twice on corner kicks to come away with a 3-1 win over Oregon Saturday night at Mulcahy Stadium in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.
The Ducks (6-3-0, 0-1-0), cut Arizona's lead in half on Kyra Fawcett's goal in the 55th minute, and generated many scoring chances in the second half, but were unable to find the net again.
How It Happened: Arizona got on the board first on Kelcey Cavarra's header in the 17th minute. The goal came off one of a record-tying 15 corners on the night for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats (4-2-2, 1-0-0) outshot the Ducks 8-4 in the first half and held a 9-3 edge in corners in the opening period.
Arizona made it 2-0 on Samantha Falasco's goal in the 48th minute.
After that, Oregon was able to create more offensive chances and it paid off when Fawcett cut into the Wildcats' lead in the 55th minute. Sofia Chambers fed a ball through to Fawcett who was unmarked in the back of the box.
The Wildcats then rounded out the scoring in the 74th minute with another goal off a corner kick, this one by Maddie Bennett.
Who Stood Out: Fawcett scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season. She was also last year's top goal scorer with five.
Marissa Everett led the Ducks with five shots.
What It Means: Oregon has one more week of road games (at No. 1 UCLA and defending NCAA Champion USC) before the schedule starts to turn in the Ducks' favor. After the trip to Los Angeles, the Ducks have five of seven at home.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"I thought our effort and execution in the second half was noticeably better and we created some chances that we probably should have put away."
"Arizona's a good team and we knew this was going to be a tough one."
Notable: Arizona's goal in the 48th minute was the first second-half goal allowed by the Ducks since the season-opener versus North Carolina State. The 15 corner kicks by the Wildcats tied an opponent record for the Ducks. North Carolina first set that mark in 2000 and Santa Clara matched it in 2011. Fawcett scored her 12th career goal, which is tied for eighth in school history. She also moved into a tie for 10th in the UO record book with 26 career points.
Up Next: The tough opening slate of road games continues with a trip to top-ranked UCLA (Thursday, 5 p.m.).
