EUGENE, Ore. – After a battle to earn the doubles point, the Oregon men's tennis team closed out Friday afternoon's match against Wisconsin with a 5-2 victory.
How it Happened: The Ducks (5-2) and the Badgers opened the match in a heated battle for the doubles point. After senior Simon Stevens and sophomore Ty Gentry blanked their Wisconsin opponents, 6-0, at the No. 3 spot, the remaining matches were decided in tiebreakers.
The doubles pairs of Armando Soemarno and Charles Roberts along with Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent found themselves deadlocked at 6-6 at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots respectively.
Soemarno and Roberts traded points with Wisconsin's Osgar O'Hoisin and Josef Dodridge, but the Badger duo would come out on top, 7-6(6), to bring the doubles point down to the No. 2 spot.
Down 5-0 early in the tiebreaker set, Clissold and Laurent rallied back to clinch the doubles point for the Ducks in dramatic fashion, 7-6(6).
Wisconsin tied the match up in singles play as UW's O'Hoisin downed Riki Oshima 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot, but it was all Oregon after that.
Gentry regained the lead for UO with a victory from the No. 6 position, 6-2, 6-4, with Clissold downing his Badger opponent, 6-3, 7-5, to extend the Ducks' lead to 3-1.
With Laurent and Tanaka heading into third sets at the No. 1 and No. 3 position, respectively, Stevens looked to clinch the match for the Ducks.
The senior fended off Josef Dodridge in the first set, 7-6, ultimately clinching the match for the Ducks with a 7-6, 6-4 victory.
Notable: With their wins today, Cormac Clissold and Ty Gentry have now won eight straight singles matches … Gentry along with partner Simon Stevens continued their stellar doubles play with their 10th straight win, and first sweep of the spring, to improve to 14-1 on the year.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
On today's doubles matches…
"This was a great battle between two very solid teams. The intensity and quality of the doubles point was something extraordinary, it was a treat to be a part of. I felt like we performed at a high level in all three positions."
On finishing off the match…
"The momentum of fending off match points in the doubles portion and with the crowd behind us we got off to a quick start in singles. Tonight was a great collegiate match versus a very strong Wisconsin team."
Up Next: The Ducks will travel to Las Vegas to take on San Diego State Saturday, Feb. 17, followed by UNLV Sunday.
