SEATTLE – Lauren Lindvall hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and the No. 2 ranked Ducks defeated No. 4 Washington, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Husky Softball Stadium.
After winning the series opener on Friday, 7-2 in nine innings, the Ducks have clinched the series and will go for the sweep tomorrow at 1 PM on ESPN2.
The Ducks (40-7, 14-3 Pac-12) are now just a half game back of UCLA (15-3 Pac-12) in the conference standings. Oregon took 2-of-3 games from the Bruins earlier this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Ducks were burning up the bathpaths in the first inning. After Jenna Lilley singled to start the game, she stole second. Lilley moved over to second on a perfect bunt single by DJ Sanders, who then also stole second. Lilley beat the throw home on a fielder's choice grounder to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead. Gwen Svekis, who hit the fielder's choice, then took second to give the Ducks three stolen bases in the inning. A strikeout by Washington pitcher Gabbie Plain, who entered the game with a 0.90 ERA, ended the inning, stranding runners at second and third.
The Oregon lead was short-lived in the first. Washington connected on a two-out, two-run homer to left and took a 2-1 lead. The Ducks had allowed just three runs in the first inning all season long.
It remained a 2-1 lead for the Huskies until Lauren Lindvall went deep in the fourth. Mia Camuso reached on an error and Lindvall made Washington pay for the mistake with a two-run blast to center to give the Ducks a 3-2 lead. The Huskies put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, but Miranda Elish froze UW leadoff hitter Taylor Van Zee for her fifth strikeout of the game to end the inning.
The Ducks added an insurance run in the sixth inning. Shannon Rhodes drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a fielder's choice and then scored on a Lindvall single and fielding error.
Washington got its first hit since the second inning with one out in the seventh, bringing the tying run and the top of the order to the plate. Van Zee followed with another single to put runners at first and second with two outs. Elish struck out Sis Bates, UW's best hitter, for the second out and first baseman Kirstyn Thomas fouled out to first to end the game.
IN THE CIRCLE: Elish (17-1) allowed two runs – both in the first inning – on seven total hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts and three walks. The sophomore now has a 1.05 ERA on the season.
AT THE PLATE: Sanders and Lindvall each had two hits in the game to lead the Ducks. Lindvall has five home runs this season and four in Pac-12 play. Sanders, who hit a grand slam in the ninth inning yesterday, dropped down a perfect bunt single for her second hit today. Oregon has had six-or-more hits in 10 of its last 11 games and six straight outings.
UP NEXT: The Ducks and Huskies meet again on Sunday at 1PM on ESPN2 for the series finale.
