Ducks Fall To No. 8 TCU In Second Round Of NCAA Tournament
05/13/18 | Men's Tennis
FORT WORTH, Texas – The Oregon men's tennis team's NCAA Tournament run ended in the second round for the third straight year Sunday afternoon as regional hosts and eighth-ranked TCU defeated the Ducks 4-0 at the Friedman Tennis Center.
How it Happened: The Horned Frogs powered to an early 1-0 lead over the Ducks (18-10, 4-4) following wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions in doubles play.
Senior Cormac Clissold and junior Thomas Laurent could not pull off the upset over TCU's No. 6 duo of Guillermo Nunez and Alex Rybakov, falling 6-1. Senior Simon Stevens and sophomore Ty Gentry suffered a similar loss to their TCU counterparts at the No. 2 spot, 6-2.
No. 21 Rybakov struck again in singles play, downing Laurent, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 1 spot to extend TCU's lead to 2-0.
The Horned Frogs clinched the match at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, as Akihiro Tanaka and Gentry fell by similar scores of 6-4, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-3, respectively.
Clissold and freshman Riki Oshima attempted to put UO on the board, picking up first set victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively, but were forced to abandon their matches after TCU clinched the win.
Notable: The Ducks close out the year with an 18-10 overall record, marking three straight seasons with 18 or more wins, the best three season stretch in recent history.
Quotable: Nils Schyllander
On his thoughts on today's match and the Ducks' season as a whole...
"I am very proud of what the team has accomplished this season, reaching pour third NCAA regional final in a row. I wish we would have come out a little quicker out of the gates in doubles play so we did not have to work uphill against a team like TCU at their house. But we will only look forward from here. There were so many great efforts all year long and at this NCAA regional. I am very proud of what we have accomplished."
Looking Ahead: With the team season over, the Ducks will turn their support towards Laurent who was selected for the NCAA Singles Tournament beginning May 23.
