Boley's Sharp-Shooting Sinks Huskies
01/04/19 | Women's Basketball
Erin Boley made a career-high eight three-pointers to help Oregon open Pac-12 play with an 84-71 win over visiting UW on Friday.
EUGENE — In a game of runs, it was the Oregon women who started fast and finished strong, as the No. 5 Ducks held off a plucky effort by Washington on Friday, 84-71, before 6,013 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
Erin Boley scored 19 of her career-high 28 points in the first quarter as the Ducks (12-1, 1-0 Pac-12) stormed out to an early lead. Washington rallied ahead in both the second and third quarters, but after UW got within one in the fourth, 66-65, Oregon ripped off eight straight to secure the victory.
"I loved our composure and toughness down the stretch, which was great," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "We went in and out; just some lapses both offensively and defensively throughout the game. It was a little roller coaster; we're definitely going to have to clean that up. But a good win against a team that's hungry."
How It Happened: Boley set the tone on the game's opening possession, sinking her first of eight three-pointers on the night. She hit two more on back-to-back possessions midway through the quarter for an 18-6 Oregon lead, and her fifth of the period made it 23-6.
From there, Washington went on an 18-0 run spanning the end of the first quarter and the opening minutes of the second. Alexis Griggsby capped the run with back-to-back three-pointers to put Washington up 24-23, on her way to a career-high 26 points. Another Griggsby three got the Huskies within one later in the period, 33-32, before UO junior Ruthy Hebard ended an 0-of-7 shooting start with her first field goal.
"We just weren't that sharp," Graves said. "Even though the turnover numbers weren't out of line, we just had some good looks and didn't make them. And defensively, we let that affect us there."

Yet another three by Griggsby got UW within 38-37 at halftime. Washington scored four straight out of the break for its biggest lead, 41-38, before Oregon caught fire with a 17-0 run. Maite Cazorla hit a pair of three-pointers during that stretch, which helped Oregon lead 58-51 after three quarters. In the fourth, UW scored seven straight to get within one at 66-65, but Hebard answered to spark an 8-0 run that included Boley's eighth and final three-pointer of the game.
"It felt great to play in my first Pac-12 game," Boley said. "I attribute a lot of it to being surrounded by a lot of great players who can get me the ball. I'm open because they have to take away a lot of other great scorers."
Who Stood Out: Boley made 10-of-14 attempts from the floor and 8-of-12 from three-point range as part of her career night. Sabrina Ionescu added 20 points and 10 assists, and Satou Sabally scored 19 while grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds. Hebard endured a 4-of-12 night but finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds, with three blocks.

What It Means: The Ducks knew that, as preseason Pac-12 favorites, they'd get every opponent's best effort this season, and Friday's game was proof.
"I feel like we're going to be the hunted this year, and that's good for us," Sabally said. "I feel like we're a championship team, and we're prepared for it."
Notable: Ionescu notched her eighth double-double of the season, and Herbard recorded her fifth. ... Boley's eight three-pointers were one off the UO single-game record of nine shared by Taylor Lilley (2010) and Katelyn Loper (2013). ... Ionescu is up to 597 career assists, 10 off the UO career record held by Lauri Landerholm (1982-87). Cazorla is third with 593.
Up Next: The Ducks host Washington State in Matthew Knight Arena on Sunday (3 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
