Laurent Ties Record, Oshima Clinches 4-3 Win
02/24/19 | Men's Tennis
MADISON, Wis. – Senior Thomas Laurent tied the program record for singles wins Sunday in the Ducks' 4-3 road win at Wisconsin. Oregon lost the doubles point and trailed 3-2 before rallying and clinching the come-from-behind victory with a win by sophomore Riki Oshima on court four. With Sunday's result, Oregon has won eight in a row and improves to 11-1 this season.
Up Next: The Ducks are back home March 7 to host Middle Tennessee with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m. (PT) at the Student Tennis Center. That weekend will also feature Oregon's Pac-12 opener against Washington (March 9).
"The boys showed huge heart once again," head coach Nils Schyllander said. "We battled back with huge purpose once we were backed in a corner and got our four points in straight-set wins. Wisconsin is a very good program and they gave us all that we can handle. It was a good batte."
In doubles play, Wisconsin (6-2) picked up wins on courts two and three to take the 1-0 match lead. Sunday marked the third time this season—in four occasions—that Oregon has rallied to win a match after losing the doubles point.
The Ducks got on the board with Laurent's record-tying effort on court one. He raced through the first set and came away with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Osgar O'Hoisin. The Duck senior is now 10-1 in dual play this season and 18-3 overall. With 93 singles wins in his career, Laurent is now tied atop the program's list with Jayson Amos (2013-17).
The Ducks took a 2-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win by Joshua Charlton over Robert Krill on court five. Charlton pushed his winning streak to 10 in a row and is now 14-3 this season. The home team, however, rattled off wins on courts two and six to take a 3-2 advantage on the scoreboard.
After a back-and-forth first set that ended in a tiebreaker, junior Ty Gentry swept through the second for a 7-6, 6-0 victory to even the match score at 3-all. Gentry has put together a double-digit winning streak of his own, a stretch that now sits at 12 straight.
The match would be decided on court four where Oshima won the opening set in a tiebreaker and led 5-3 in the second. Wisconsin's Jared Pratt fought back to even the set at 5-all but Oshima put the match away in another tiebreaker, his fourth of the weekend.
