Long Ball Downs Ducks in Game Two
03/24/19 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon softball team dropped the second game of its three-game series against No. 7 Washington, 14-2, on Sunday at Jane Sanders Stadium.
How it Happened: Sophomore Maddie MacGrandle worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, but Washington rallied with two outs in the second for a run on a double and an RBI single. The Huskies added two more in the third on an RBI fielder's choice and an RBI double to extend their lead to 3-0.
Back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning pushed Washington's lead to 6-0 before Oregon's offense found life in the bottom half. Freshman Allee Bunker ripped a leadoff single up the middle for Oregon's first hit off of UW ace Gabbie Plain, and sophomore Shaye Bowden followed with a screaming line drive down the left-field line for an RBI double to put the Ducks on the board. The Ducks would get one more in the inning as freshman Rachel Cid lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Bowden from third.
But Washington responded in a big way in the top of the fifth, scoring eight runs on three homers to make it 14-2. Freshman Annalisa Williamson singled in the bottom half, but Plain struck out the side to secure the run-rule victory and the series win.
At the Plate: Bowden and Cid remain tied for the team RBI lead with 17 apiece after driving in Oregon's two runs, and Williamson notched her third hit of the year. Haley Cruse drew UO's lone walk of the game.
In the Circle: MacGrandle (2-5) took the loss after allowing nine runs with two strikeouts over 3.2 innings in her first outing since Feb. 28. Freshman Kailey Krueger pitched 1.1 innings of relief, allowing five runs.
Notable: Sunday marked the three-year anniversary since Jane Sanders Stadium officially opened on March 24, 2016.
Up Next: The Ducks will look to salvage a game in the series against the Huskies and snap an 11-game skid in the series finale on Monday at Jane Sanders Stadium (6 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
