03/27/19 | Women's Beach Volleyball
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Oregon beach volleyball team earned a dominant 5-0 sweep of Concordia (Irvine) on Wednesday to headline a 1-3 week in Southern California with its second win of the season.
The Ducks (2-8) also faced three top-15 teams in SoCal, falling to No. 13 Loyola Maryount and No. 1 UCLA at Santa Monica Beach on Tuesday before splitting with Concordia and No. 9 Long Beach State on Wednesday in Long Beach.
Oregon will now turn its attention to preparing for its lone home match of the season, set for April 6 against Portland at Amazon Park in Eugene.
How it Happened: Opening their day in Long Beach on Wednesday, the Ducks controlled the match from the opening serve against Concordia, dominating on all five courts. Brooke Nuneviller and Lindsey Vander Weide continued their strong season at the No. 1 spot with a commanding 21-8, 21-8 victory, and the duo of Emily Mattoon and Maddy Silberger-Franek ran away with a 21-5, 21-7 win on the No. 2 court.
Ally Haden and Josie Cole pulled out a 21-15, 16-21, 15-8 win at the No. 3 spot, and seniors August Raskie and Lauren Page teamed up for a thrilling 20-22, 21-15, 15-10 win on the fourth court. Freshmen Elise Ferreira and Carly Wallace took care of business on the No. 5 court, 21-13, 21-19, to round out the lineup and complete the sweep for the Ducks.
Oregon put up a fight later on Wednesday against No. 9 Long Beach State on its home courts, ultimately falling, 4-1. Nuneviller and Vander Weide earned their team-best sixth win of the year at the top spot with a 21-17, 22-20 victory, while Mattoon and Silberger-Franek fought to force a third set on the second court before falling, 21-18, 17-21, 15-7.
The Ducks opened the week with a pair of 5-0 losses to No. 13 LMU and No. 1 UCLA on Tuesday at the Bruins' home courts. Nuneviller and Vander Weide were very competitive against both team's top pairs, falling 22-20, 21-17 to LMU and 21-17, 21-17 to UCLA.
Notable: With six wins this season, Nuneviller and Vander Weide are just two wins shy of matching the single-season wins record for a pair in the young history of Oregon beach volleyball.
Up Next: The Ducks will host Portland on April 6 at Amazon Park in Eugene.
