Ducks Host Portland in First Ever Home Match
04/04/19 | Women's Beach Volleyball
Oregon will host Portland this Saturday at 11 a.m. at Amazon Park in the first regular season home event in program history
EUGENE, Ore. - Playing a home beach match in Eugene for the first time in program history, the Oregon beach volleyball team will host Portland this Saturday at 11 a.m. at Amazon Park.
The Ducks are coming off a 1-3 showing in Southern California last week, including a dominat 5-0 sweep of Concordia (Irvine) for their second win of the season.
MATCH DETAILS
Saturday's dual match at Amazon Park (24th & Amazon) will be free and open to the public. Amazon Park features two sand courts, so two matches will played at a time beginning at 11 a.m. The first team to get three victories out of the five matches played will win the dual. Oregon will also honor its 2019 seniors on Saturday - Lauren Page, August Raskie, Maddy Silberger-Franek and Lindsey Vander Weide.
DUCKS SEEKING SECOND WIN AGAINST PORTLAND
Oregon won on four of five courts to take down the Pilots on March 10 and secure its first win of the year. Brooke Nuneviller and Lindsey Vander Weide continued their strong start to the season with a win on the No. 1 court, 21-18, 21-18, and the senior duo of Lauren Page and August Raskie dominated on court No. 4, 21-18, 21-9. Emily Mattoon and Maddy Silberger-Franek rebounded from a tight first-set loss to win the next two, 21-8, 15-8, and earn a point at the No. 2 court, and freshmen Elise Ferreira and Carly Wallace won a thrilling match at the No. 5 spot, 21-19, 22-24, 18-16, to help clinch the Oregon victory.
NEXT WIN MARKS PROGRAM MILESTONE
The Ducks have been building up their beach program since its inception in 2014, but have not exceeded two wins since the inaugural season (3-8). Oregon (2-8) has three regular season matches and the Pac-12 Championship remaining to try and get that elusive third win and more.
OREGON SWEEPS CONCORDIA IN DOMINANT FASHION
The Ducks controlled the match from the opening serve against Concordia, dominating on all five courts. Brooke Nuneviller and Lindsey Vander Weide continued their strong season at the No. 1 spot with a commanding 21-8, 21-8 victory, and the duo of Emily Mattoon and Maddy Silberger-Franek ran away with a 21-5, 21-7 win on the No. 2 court. Ally Haden and Josie Cole pulled out a 21-15, 16-21, 15-8 win at the No. 3 spot, and seniors August Raskie and Lauren Page teamed up for a thrilling 20-22, 21-15, 15-10 win on the fourth court. Freshmen Elise Ferreira and Carly Wallace took care of business on the No. 5 court, 21-13, 21-19, to round out the lineup and complete the sweep for the Ducks.
NUNEVILLER, VANDER WEIDE IMPRESSING AT TOP SPOT
Oregon's top duo of FR Brooke Nuneviller and SR Lindsey Vander Weide has gotten their season off to a strong start, posting a 6-4 record through the first 10 matches. The pair started the year 2-0 with wins over the No. 1 pairs from No. 12 Stanford and No. 14 Arizona, and recorded their sixth win last week with a victory over the top pair from No. 9 Long Beach State. Nuneviller and Vander Weide have already tied the UO single-season wins record for a pair, and are two wins shy of matching the UO all-time wins record (8) for a pair, set by Ronika Stone and Maggie Scott (2017-18). Vander Weide owns the most individual career wins in program history with 15.
HARRER PROMOTED TO FULL-TIME ASSISTANT
After serving as the volunteer assistant coach in 2018, HC Matt Ulmer promoted Janice Harrer to the role of full-time assistant as he continues to build up Oregon's beach program. A 2012 inductee into the Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame, Harrer brings more than 15 years of professional beach volleyball experience to the Ducks. Said Ulmer: "The addition of Janice to our program has been truly impactful. She teaches and works with unbelievable passion and it's contagious to our student-athletes. Janice is one of the most successful beach volleyball players of all time and our players have benefited from her experiences both intellectually and tactically. Bringing Janice on board full time is a very important step to the future of our program."
DUCKS ADD BEACH-ONLY RECRUITS TO ROSTER
The Ducks recruited multiple beach-only players to join the student-athletes who cross over from the indoor squad as the UO beach program continues to evolve. The Ducks added freshmen Ally Haden, Emily Mattoon, Nicole Villamil and Carly Wallace to join returners Josie Cole (sophomore) and Maddy Silberger-Franek, and those six have been working with Harrer since the fall in preparation for the 2019 season. "I have been impressed with the amount of growth they have shown as well as their work ethic.," said Ulmer. "They are putting in the time and energy to become successful student-athletes."
ELITE DUCKS LOOK TO CARRY SUCCESS TO THE SAND
Coming off one of the best indoor seasons in program history, seven student-athletes from the Ducks' Elite Eight squad are on the 2019 roster. Crossing over from the hardwood are AVCA indoor all-Americans Ronika Stone (2nd), August Raskie (3rd), Lindsey Vander Weide (3rd), Brooke Nuneviller (HM) and Willow Johnson (HM), as well as SR Lauren Page and RSO Brooke Van Sickle. Nuneviller was a tremendous beach player in high school and will likely team with Vander Weide as the team's top pair, and Stone is five wins away from being Oregon's all-time beach leader. Johnson will miss the beach season after sustaining an injury, and Van Sickle likely won't see action either as she recovers from surgery. Also joining the 2019 squad is FR Elise Ferreira, the daughter of former UO coach Carl Ferreira who will be a true freshman setter for the Ducks in the fall.
