Distance Crew Shines at Stanford Invite
03/29/19 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Including an NCAA-leading performance at 5,000 meters from Jessica Hull, the distance crew from the No. 5 Oregon women's track and field team collected a win, three UO top-10 marks and three personal bests Friday night at the Stanford Invitational.
In her first outdoor race since winning the 2018 NCAA title at 1,500 meters, Hull took off at the bell lap after running among the lead group throughout the race. She stopped the clock at 15:34.93 to establish a new NCAA leader, the No. 3 time in the world this year and the No. 4 mark in Oregon history. Hull had a previous PR of 16:29.14 but had only run the distance to pick up points at the Pac-12 Championships.
Running in her first-ever steeplechase, junior Amanda Gehrich ran to a time of 10:15.55 to become the No. 7 performer in program history. Gehrich was primarily a 1,500-meter runner last season, scoring at the Pac-12 meet in the event and going on to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary.
Teammate and fellow NCAA DMR champion Susan Ejore opened her outdoor season by knocking more than three second off her previous best at 1,500 meters. The senior Duck crossed the finish line in a time of 4:18.11 to finish fifth overall in the invitational section of the race.
In the team's final event of the night, redshirt junior Carmela Cardama Baez became just the fourth Duck in program history to dip below 33 minutes over 10,000 meters. The two-time cross country All-America performer posted a time of 32:55.50 in Friday's invitational section. With the time, she moved to third on the all-time UO list in the event. Cardama Baez was 20th overall and 11th among collegiate runners.
Notable: Freshman Taylor Chiotti ran 4:26.88 to finish sixth in section four of the 1,500 meters. The race was her second of the season after an 800-meter opener last weekend in San Diego. Phily Bowden made her outdoor debut in an Oregon singlet with a top-30 effort (33:35.63) at 10,000 meters.
