EUGENE, Ore. – On the strength of winning three conference titles this past weekend, redshirt senior Cravon Gillespie has been named the 2019 Pac-12 Men's Track Athlete of the Year as voted on by the league's head coaches. Gillespie becomes the seventh Duck to win the award, and third over the past four years.
Â
Gillespie swept the Pac-12 100- and 200-meter titles and was the second leg of the Ducks' victorious 4x100-meter relay with Rieker Daniel, Oraine Palmer and Spenser Schmidt. Responsible for 22.5 points during the weekend, Gillespie was the Pac-12 Men's Athlete of the Meet.
Â
All three wins came by way of a school-record performance. In the 100 meters, Gillespie stopped the clock in 9.97 which also tied the Pac-12 Championships meet record first set by Andre DeGrasse during the 2015 meet. Gillespie capped his weekend by lowering his own school mark at 200 meters, posting a time of 20.17 in the win.
Â
The Ducks' 4x100-meter relay opened day two of the conference meet with a time of 38.72 which secured the win and surpassed the previous record of 38.76 from the 2017 season.
Â
During the regular season, Gillespie was a two-time Pac-12 Athlete of the Week. The Pasadena, Calif., native enters next week's NCAA West Preliminary ranked No. 3 nationally at 100 meters and fourth at 200 meters and in the UO 4x100-meter relay.
Â
The Men of Oregon won their 13th-consecutive Pac-12 team title at last weekend's conference meet. Behind eight event titles, the Ducks scored 173 points which was 33 clear of runner-up UCLA. The eight conference titles are a new program high for the men. Overall, Oregon won 11 Pac-12 titles this year coupled with the three titles on the women's side.
