05/31/19 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – In recognition of their standout outdoor campaigns, redshirt senior Cravon Gillespie and associate head coach Curtis Taylor have earned USTFCCCA regional honors. Gillespie is the West Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year while Taylor has been named West Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year.
Oregon will cap its 2019 season at the NCAA Championships (June 5-8) in Austin, Texas. Collectively, the Ducks have a nation-best 30 entries—15 men, 15 women—at the national meet. The program will be represented by 25 individuals and three relays spread among 17 events at the NCAA Championships.
Gillespie, the 2019 Pac-12 Men's Track Athlete of the Year, is an NCAA qualifier at 100 and 200 meters and as a leg of the Ducks' 4x100-meter relay. He was a Pac-12 champion in those three events, setting school records along the way in each. With his 9.97 performance in the 100-meter final, Gillespie tied the Pac-12 Championships meet record first established by Andre DeGrasse in 2015.
Gillespie lowered his own record at 200 meters, stopping the clock at 20.17 during the conference meet. He teamed with Spenser Schmidt, Rieker Daniel and Oraine Palmer for a school-record 38.72 to win the Pac-12 title in the 4x100-meter relay.
The Pasadena, Calif., native accounted for 22.5 points at the Pac-12 Championships and was named the Athlete of the Meet. He helped the Men of Oregon to their 13th-consecutive Pac-12 team title. Gillespie entered the season with a personal best of 10.12 from last year. He has five wind-legal marks faster than that this season.
Taylor is the Ducks' sprints, hurdles and relays coach. His group is responsible for eight of Oregon's 15 NCAA Championship entries on the men's side, spread among five individuals and one relay. Taylor had four Pac-12 champions among the Oregon men with Gillespie at 100 and 200 meters, Eric Edwards Jr. in the 110-meter hurdles and the Ducks' 4x100-meter relay.
Taylor coached Gillespie to Pac-12 Track Athlete of the Year accolades while Edwards' time of 13.59 to win the conference hurdles titles is the second fastest by a freshman in the NCAA. The Ducks also rank No. 4 in the country in the 4x100-meter relay. At the Pac-12 Championships, the Oregon men swept the top-three spots in the 200 meters and advanced four to the 100-meter final.
